Earlier this year, I mentioned the twelve quilts I donated to my son’s fire department. These quilts were not designated for any specific age or purpose, so the size wasn’t important. As I did a little research into quilt sizes needed for donations, there are some specific sizes recommended that I wanted to share: • Hospice bed: 63” x 80” • Neo Natal: 36” x 36” • Crib: 34-36” x 48” • Wheel Chair: 36” x 48” • Nap Quilt: 40” x 55-60” While I encourage you to donate quilts, it’s helpful to know the sizes needed for different purposes. Bargello piecing refers to the technique of sewing strips into bands, then subcutting the resulting bands into segments. The segments are then arranged and stitched together, usually with a ‘wave’ of color created by staggering the color placement of adjacent segments. This technique is a perennial favorite of quilters because of its simplicity and versatility. Sewing the bands into tubes makes it quicker and easier to cut or unsew segments wherever you choose. In Ocean Currents, most of the tube segments are cut across; only two segments have seams unpicked—though once your tubes are cut into segments, you may unpick seams or cut segments and arrange them however you choose for a completely different look. We dug a little deeper into this pattern and we made a fascinating discovery—uncovering what looks like old dinosaur stomping grounds! Getting Started About our Patterns We recommend that you read all of the instructions before starting a project and that you cut and sew one block before cutting all of your fabric. Using a rotary cutter, mat and an acrylic ruler, cut the shape to the size indicated in the cutting list. Our patterns list finished block sizes, which are typically ½" smaller than unfinished block sizes because they do not include seam allowances.
