My first car was a three-year-old, 20,000-mile Lada Riva 1300SL. It was very cheap and came with a small, factory-supplied handbook specifying all the servicing and maintenance – and explaining in great and unambiguous detail exactly how to do it. ‘I wonder,’ I mused, ‘how long it’ll last if I follow these instructions?’ The answer, 30 years and a further 161,000 miles later, is that I don’t know. But I’ll be sure to let you know when it finally conks out. It’s behaved impeccably, been economical, utterly reliable and very sparing in repairs. With a sharp chassis (I tweaked the steering angles) and a hugely oversquare, OHC belt-drive engine, it’s enormous fun, too.
