The Phoenix Children’s Home in Northcroft currently takes care of eight vulnerable children aged from 4 months to 16 years. The children have been abused, abandoned or orphaned. Aroona Chetty, director of Phoenix Child Welfare, said there was a need to help more children from the community and they aimed to accommodate 24. “But we cannot do this alone,” said Chetty. Mayuri’s Jewellers has been robbed once again, this time at the Chatsworth Centre. On Tuesday afternoon, a group of men robbed the shop of an unknown amount of jewellery. A video taken by a tenant at the centre shows four men trying to kick in the glass windows to gain access to the jewellery. The suspects wore hats. One of them had a municipal uniform and another a mask. Centre management released a statement: “We confirm there was an incident at one of the jewellery stores at Chatsworth Centre. No staff or shoppers were injured and we confirm there was no shoot-out. The situation is under control and business can resume as normal. RUKMIN Singh, who is affectionately referred to as “Sunshine” by her family, turned 104 on Tuesday. The Northdale, Pietermaritzburg, resident lives with her daughter, Romila Singh, 75, and her immediate family. Rukmin Singh was born and raised in Jacobs, Durban. She has six children, 20 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren. She was married at the age of 17 to Ramlakan Singh who died 50 years ago. Her daily activities include sitting outside and admiring nature. One of her recent highlights was visiting the Kruger National Park. THE Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) has ruled that South African expatriates who lost their citizenship when they took citizenship of other countries, should have it reinstated. The DA initially took the matter to the Pretoria High Court on behalf of South African citizens who discovered that they had lost their South African citizenship through Section 6(1)(A) of the Citizenship Act. In terms of the act, one automatically forfeits South African citizenship when one acquires the citizenship of another country. This is unless you acquire it through marriage or you make a special application to the minister of Home Affairs ahead of time.
