POLICE have arrested a man who has allegedly been carjacking people while pretending to be interested in buying their vehicles. Damien Daniel Kisten, 34, appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday. FROM Chatsworth to a chateau in south-west France, a local clothing designer is on the French Riveria to compete in his first world angling championship. Zahed Moosa, 40, of Havenside, is among a team of South Africans who landed in Mimizan at the weekend to participate in the 4th Fips Pairs Surfcasting World Championships. The competition started on Monday and ends on June 6. Moosa and his teammates will be marooned within a 20 to 30m radius for the duration of the competition, with the aim of catching as many fish as possible. Naicker, 39, a shipping company employee appeared in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday for the killing of Jackie Naidoo. Naidoo, 35, was burnt beyond recognition during a fire at her home in Westham, Phoenix, on May 9. The matter was adjourned to May 30. She lived in a two-bedroom council flat with her son, 12, and Naicker. They had been in a relationship for four years. FOR almost six months, the family of a missing Malvern man had hoped to find him. Instead, they found he’d been killed and his body was lying in a mortuary in Richards Bay. Those allegedly responsible for his death are expected to apply for bail next week. A GEOLOGIST’S report has found that it would be unsafe for displaced residents to live on a vacant plot of land in Reservoir Hills. The report, compiled earlier this month by Dr Saumitra Misra, was commissioned by residents. Many informal dwellers in Reservoir Hills lost their homes in the April floods. Land between Pemilton Avenue and Shannon Drive was identified by the city for the construction of Temporary Residential Units (TRUs). The TRU project is expected to be headed by the Department of Human Settlements in the province. According to the report, the land was not geologically stable enough to build houses on. NORTH Coast residents have been forced to drive on pavements after a significant part of Genazzano Road in Seatides washed away during the weekend floods. The road is frequented by La Mercy, Desainagar and Seatides residents who fear that if a further collapse occurs, they would be trapped. Nazir Sadack, Tongaat resident and member of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), said: “If the roadway, which is currently very shaky, gives in, we will all be trapped. Currently we have stopped all heavy-duty trucks from going through. AFRIFORUM has filed an application in the Pretoria High Court claiming that the National Road Traffic Act is too vague. The civil rights body says that legally there is no need for driving licence cards to be renewed every five years. After consulting with its legal team and legal experts, AfriForum found that punishing people for driving with expired licence cards was potentially illegal. It said the government may have been punishing people wrongfully for more than 20 years. It is, therefore, seeking a declaratory order – where motorists cannot by law be penalised or fined for not being in possession of a renewed driving licence card.
