BURNT REMAINS FOUND IN MANHOLE Finally, justice 5 years after businessman slain JANINE MOODLEY janine.moodley@inl.co.za AFTER nearly five years, the family of murdered Ladysmith businessman and father of six, Haroon Warasally, got justice. On Monday, Philani Thulani Mbhele, 26, and Sanele Amos Madide, 24, were convicted and sentenced in the Newcastle Regional Court to life imprisonment. They also received a further 15 years for robbery and 15 years for defeating the ends of justice. The sentences will run concurrently. Mbhele and Madide were arrested after Warasally’s burnt remains were found in a manhole near an abandoned hotel outside Newcastle. Warasally, 56, the owner of Pelican Security in Ladysmith, was stabbed, doused with petrol, set alight and his remains were dumped in the manhole along the N11 on June 2, 2016.…

In contrast, in South Africa, school maths computations and other kinds of mathematical work such as graph sketching and construction of geometric figures are done with pencil and paper despite the availability of computer software to perform these tasks. Hard work but some good strikes THE rock and surf fishing has been up and down. The warmer water has put a lot of the fish off feeding but there are some quality fish being caught by persistent anglers. Grey sharks have been the main inedibles caught with any sort of consistency. The North Coast has not sent in any news of great catches or consistent fishing. The area around the Tugela mouth is still producing a lot of smaller kob. These fish are not fussy when it comes to bait selection so my recommendation is to use sardine and chokka. Rebecca Rosendaw, 45, moved into an outbuilding near Mount Vernon earlier this month. Dawn Gounden, a forensic consultant working with missing persons and the family spokesperson, said Maharaj left home at 6.15am to buy cigarettes from a nearby garage but did not return. Gounden and her team checked the garage’s CCTV footage but there was no record of him. She said Maharaj’s sister reported him missing at the Durban North SAPS. NSFAS plagued with scandals THE decision by former president Jacob Zuma to introduce the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) was met with mixed reaction. Opposition parties, including the DA, expressed their disapproval of the scheme which was intended to provide financial aid to students from poor and working-class families, who wished to pursue their studies beyond matric. Until the introduction of NSFAS, many students were deprived of the opportunity to study further. Tertiary education was the preserve of the wealthy and with the high poverty levels in South Africa, the majority of school leavers were destined to survive on just a matric certificate. We cannot let our guard down AS SOUTH Africa recently marked a year since Covid-19, I would like to commend those who continue to lead the fight against the virus and pay tribute to those who succumbed to it. While the contagion surfaced in China, the respiratory disease disrupted the lives of millions of human beings. Although the recovery rate in South Africa is high and we are in lockdown level 1, we cannot let our guard down. South Africans must continue with safety precautions. Dusi history awaits Indian teen Aadila ESHLIN VEDAN eshlin.vedan@inl.co.za PIETERMARITZBURG resident Aadila Kajee is set to make history this weekend by becoming the first Indian woman and Muslim woman to participate in the gruelling three-day MyLife Dusi Canoe Marathon. What is especially interesting about 19-year-old Kajee is that she is a newcomer to paddling, having only started in lockdown in October last year. “On one of the runs, the guys were arguing about what is more difficult between the Comrades or Dusi.
