Pushing open the shop door and dragging in the buggy behind me, I heard the familiar jingling sound ring in my ears
‘Hi Nanny!’ I called to my grandma, Irene, sitting behind the till.
It was meant to be my day off, but I couldn’t stay away from the shop!
‘That was you once, you know,’ she replied, seeing my little girl, Harriet, then 13 months, waving from her pram. ‘Coming to visit your old nan at work!’
‘I know,’ I said, laughing. ‘Some things never change!’
And for my nan, that has never rung truer.
She’s 96 and has been working in the family-run shop for 40 years.
