Cocoon Hamburg duo Arne Schaffhausen and Wayan Raabe have been making music together in various guises for over the last 20 years, but it is as Extrawelt that the experienced duo have forged their most distinctive sound. Their fourth studio album under the moniker, Unknown, is a wild exploration of synth-driven, acid-heavy robotics. Stepping away from dancefloor-focused techno, the duo swoop into timeless electro, stripped-back boogie, cosmic synths, spacey ambience, old school breaks and futuristic experimentalism. Industrial-leaning, but infused with emotion, the record combines snapping drum machines, rugged synth lines and grumbling bass with warm melodies, jangling echoes and otherworldly effects.
