Throughout the 1950s, I went to an elementary school that did not teach science. For my 12th birthday, my dad tossed a Montgomery Ward catalog at me and said, “Pick out your birthday gift!” At that time, it was unusual for a girl to choose what I did, but I picked out a tri-fold-out deluxe chemistry set equipped with microscope, test tubes, test tube holders, slides and chemicals.
