S tep back into the 1960s with local shops, friendly communities, market towns, little traffic and lovely cycling. Experience the wilderness beyond the lush Tweed Valley and few big climbs, but lots of big scenery. Now the Borders Railway, axed in 1969 but rebuilt in 2015, is back up and running, it’s easy to get to our base, Galashiels, with mid-sizetown facilities, pubs and B&Bs aplenty.
ROUTE ONE
Waterside workout 78 miles Rivers, reservoirs, racy roads You’ll ride some A-road miles, but they’re mostly quiet. Head west along the Tweed Valley through Innerleithen and Peebles (stop at the last cafe for 50 miles!). After a stiff climb between the thrillingly raw Talla and Megget Reservoirs, it’s down with the prevailing wind past St Mary’s Loch to Selkirk for tea.
