While the censuses from 1841-1921 tell us where our ancestors lived, other records show who actually owned land and where, and how the titles to their properties were registered. There are many sources online holding this information, as we’ll explain.
Find landowners with more than an acre
Findmypast members should head straight to the collections ‘England and Wales, Return of Owners of Land 1873’ (www.snipca.com/45956) and ‘Scotland, Return of Owners of Land 1873’ (www.snipca.com/45957), which list landowners who owned more than an acre of land. In England and Wales this was the first national survey of land ownership since the Domesday Book of 1086, although it didn’t include London.
It lists the names of landowners (1 in our screenshot below), their addresses 2, the size of their holdings in acres, roods…
