In content and mood, and as a glimpse of emerging trends, the Furniture Show (together with Euroluce and the Office Furniture Show) is effectively the start of the Milan Expo year. Two spectacularly recognisable beads of light embellishing a Led front: that’s how, in the mid-2000s, Ingolstadt presented its new lighting graphics to the world. A process that marked a new way of transferring family feeling from grille and panels to lighting. This was 2006 and the first Audi to inaugurate a lighting signature was the A6 Avant. Today, when the morphology of daytime lighting is being looked at by all manufacturers, the Germans are aiming to strengthen their leadership with a state-of-the-art Lighting Assistance Centre: 15 professionals and 120 metres of matt-black tunnel, the longest stretch of road in Europe for studying the lighting of the future. New light sources mean new forms for lighting design. This is the fundamental imperative that has driven research in recent years, as increasingly leading edge Leds and Oleds have to a great extent replaced traditional technologies. It goes without saying that the traditional, in terms of lighting, has been rewritten in the renewal of lampstands, chandeliers and desk lights. So we have “immaterial lights” for lamps with flat surface diffusers which are quite inconspicuous in a room and only reveal their function when lit: like the Discovery family by Artemide, which uses Led strips arranged radially on a round aluminium profile, injecting light on to the plastic surface that is barely perceptible when extinguished. Lights are changing shape and, in their turn, shapes are changing to cater for increasingly evolved, technological lights. All this has a number of implications for cars, starting with brand identity: if originally this task was the responsibility of the grille – the grander, more historic and important, the more prestigious the brand – it is lights that have taken over the leading role at the front. Both the front and rear lights are now “projects within the project”, with design teams dedicated exclusively to their formal definition. This is a special moment for Automotive Lighting - Magneti Marelli’s division dedicated to vehicle lighting. After participating, together with Audi, in the design and construction of the first full LED headlights containing a laser high-beam module for use in a standard production car, the super sports car Audi R8 unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, it obtained two prestigious Red Dot Award 2015 recognitions: one, as “Best of the Best”, for the Full LED intelligent headlight developed with Audi for the new TT, and another for an innovative rear light prototype that uses Oled technology. To celebrate its 25 years in Europe, Toyota’s premium brand Lexus gave itself a fitting birthday present: the concept for an extreme compact study. But although not confirmed as a future production model, the size of the LF-SA, as it is named, also holds a message which responds to the marketing trend in the direction of more compact models being taken by most premium car makers. Indeed, the model is just 3,450 mm in length and seats 2 adults, plus 2 more on additional back seats. From fragile vacuum glass tubes to solid-state semiconductors. From lamps to LEDs: luminous diodes have turned on the revolution of light. Not only in electronics - and not only in so-called consumer electronics - but in cars too, where new lighting technologies have transformed the face (and the B-side) of cars over the past decade, with a sea-change in technology reminiscent of the demise of cathode ray tubes and the arrival of plasma and then Lcd flat-panel displays. In March 1930 Woolf "Babe" Barnato - one of those gentlemen drivers remembered as the "Bentley Boys" and a two-time winner of the Le Mans 24 Hours (he was also son of the company’s chairman) - won a bet of one hundred pounds racing from Cannes against the famous Blue Train.
