ARUN Gandhi, the grandson of the late Mahatma Gandhi, died in the early hours of Tuesday in Kolhapur, India. The journalist, author and peace activist was 89.
According to a Facebook post by his niece, Uma Dhupelia-Mesthrie, Arun Gandhi was born on April 14, 1934, at Phoenix Settlement, Durban – the farm founded by Mahatma Gandhi in 1904.
He was the second child of Manilal and Sushila Gandhi, and brother of Sita and Ela Gandhi.
In 1956, he left South Africa to take his father’s ashes to India. He was not allowed to return home because he had married an Indian citizen and under the laws of the time, he was not allowed to bring his wife and children to South Africa.
