VAN thefts cost tradespeople £264million a year, according to a new study. A van is broken into every 23 minutes in the UK, and it costs the owner an average of £5,584 in lost tools each time
Of the 1,037 tradespeople surveyed by van insurance firm Honcho, 89 per cent said their insurer wouldn’t pay out for the full cost of tools stolen from their van.
In addition to this immediate loss, tradespeople whose vans are broken into are also put out of work for an average of 30 days, losing them a further £5,982 in income from not being able to carry out their booked jobs.
For plumbers, electricians and builders – who have average salaries of £31,787, £32,500 and £42,500 respectively – this is a significant blow.
