Things aren’t always what they seem at the kitchen table; keeping skincare fresh and effective means a facial routine occasionally infiltrates the cooking zone. Jean Nouvel’s new take on the games compendium is turning the tables on our lazy day diversions. Crafted by Bottega Ghianda, the ‘Enigme a Tics’ cabinet-cumtable is made from pearwood with ebony and maple inlays, doors and drawers concealing the pieces for chess, game of the goose, draughts and backgammon. With playful inlaid metal tiling from De Castelli as our backdrop, we’d happily hole up with the table and a cocktail or two from Matthew Biancaniello, the pop-up bar impresario who coined the phrase ‘Eat Your Drink’ and who has recently taken his ‘gastronomy in a glass’ to new levels with his Mon-Li 12-course liquid tasting menu at Malibu’s Calamigos Beach Club. The first ‘Octo’ watch was designed in the 1990s by Swiss watch brand Gérald Genta. Like its eponymous founder, the Genta studio was adept at shapeshifting, melding the circular bezel and angular case of the ‘Octo’ in a blend of jeweller-style finishes. Bulgari acquired the Genta business in 1999 and ever since has been honing his instincts for geometric play with verve and style. For its ‘Octo Finissimo Automatic’, Bulgari spurned a traditional gold finish in favour of an industrial approach. The watch’s 18ct-rose-gold case and bracelet is sandblasted, infusing the metal with a uniquely modern, machine-like gleam. ‘GOPLE’ LAMP, BY BIG, FOR ARTEMIDE For those who struggle to keep their indoor flora alive, the ‘Gople’ lamp may be a godsend. A collaboration between Artemide and Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), the lamp features technology that aids plant growth, while also providing functional white light. The RWB (red-white-blue) lighting system, which Artemide patented in 2011, replaces the standard ‘red-green-blue’ as the combination favoured for the psychophysical wellbeing of both man and plant. JUDGE DO HO SUH ARTIST The London-based Korean artist’s ongoing reimagining of places like home has taken many forms, including Bridging Home, a plywood replica of a traditional Hanok-style Korean house, complete with bamboo garden, crash landed on a footbridge in the City of London. For the Best New Hotel category, Suh selected Healing Stay Kosmos on Ulleungdo Island in South Korea. ‘I’ve never been but I know the island is very small and pretty remote,’ he says. ‘It takes several hours on rough seas to get there, and the island is notorious for storms and snow, so I thought it was really brave to build there. Japanese designer Kei Ninomiya is renowned for creating sculptural or padded forms that appear to multiply or tessellate as architectural assemblages across the body. This multi-layered dress is handmade using frills of polyester organdy, connected by rivets. On the A/W18 catwalk, geometry met floristry head on as Ninomiya collaborated with Japanese artist Azuma Makoto on a series of floral masks that dramatically trailed across the face. This headpiece, designed by Makoto and executed by Wagner Kreusch of London flower school, has been crafted from a profusion of posies, including begonias, orchids and scabiosas. Most of us hate to be pigeonholed, but that’s probably because we don’t have ‘The Mail Box’, designed by Jinsik Kim. Slim, discreet and elegant, this brushed stainless steel box hugs the wall, its curved top and plain back concealing a rack of storage slots on each side. It marries perfectly with Jaime Hayon’s ‘Lightolight’ lamp, one of a series of wall and floor lamps that feature an upward-facing cup shaded by a rotating dome, giving a soft, indirect light, as well as Giuseppe Bavuso’s ‘Moon’ door, which comes in numerous finishes with matching handles. When considering the perfect pedestals for our best performing perfumes, we turned to Venice-based studio Zaven’s ‘Piccoli Oggetti Possibili’ (Small Possible Objects) collection. Known as ‘POP’ for short, these bold, primary-coloured podiums play the perfect supporting role to this year’s standout scents. BEST LINE EXTENSION Introduced in 2017, Prada’s Les Mirages perfume line has grown by four this year. According to Prada’s nose Daniela Andrier, they are a projection of what the Orient smells like, beautifully composed dreams of the East filled with the likes of figs, musk and patchouli. Evidens de Beauté’s first Paris salon, devoted to the face and hair, marks a milestone for the ten-year-old beauty label and a major step for young interior architect Emmanuelle Simon. Like the brand, the space is an homage to Japan, a serene world of sober shades, tatami mats and raku shelves. To create a feeling of intimacy from the moment you arrive, Simon has turned what could have been a banal corridor into an appealing arched passage in polished concrete. It leads to a spiral staircase wrapped around a weathered tree trunk, and treatment rooms with ceilings featuring white bas-reliefs of Japanese landscapes by the artist Zoltàn Zsakó. When we spied Ferm Living’s new Bauhaus-style shelf, with its clever brass spheres and rod brackets, we needed something equally elegant to complement it. We found it in Paint & Paper Library’s graphic ‘Chart’ wallpaper, and in the Seoul-based interior designer Teo Yang’s new all-natural skincare line, Eath Library. Informed by traditional Korean medicine, its name and packaging are inspired by a visit Yang made to a traditional doctor and his book-lined office years ago. The hefty library was described by the doctor as ‘an archive of 2,000 years that carries many people’s effort and hope for a healthier and happier future’. Yang set out to capture some of that knowledge within the products, while the bottles recall the stacked books.…

RICK OWENS Rick Owens’ collection explored the trappings of human adornment, considering the physical impact of bustles, panniers and exaggerated costumes of the past. This fascination translated into padded and bulbous silhouettes in neutral tones and yellow-and-brown check, including tunics in camel hair and linen felt, bum bag-like pillows, jackets with puffy extrusions, and oversized parkas with swaddling sleeves. THE NEST, NAMIB DESERT, NAMIBIA, BY PORKY HEFER This secluded retreat in the Namib Desert is the first new build house by South African designer Porky Hefer, who took cues from his ‘Nest’ furniture series, upscaling and extrapolating architecturally. Conceived for conservationist Swen Bachran, the house is thatched with reeds collected from along the Zambezi River, providing natural insulation, while the bricks and steel frame were handmade on site. Get in the right frame of mind with Inga Sempé’s ‘Vitrail’ wall mirrors, here set against a backdrop of Dedar’s bouclé-textured ‘Karandash’ fabric. Inspired by antique Venetian mirrors, which often included smaller pieces of mirror around a central looking-glass, ‘Vitrail’ comes in four different shapes, each incorporating coloured mirror-glass strips set in rubber frames. Meanwhile, Bang & Olufsen’s ‘Beosound Edge’ speaker, designed by Michael Anastassiades, forms a perfect circle and features proximity sensors that activate its otherwise-invisible touch controls. Dark fables abound about the origin of Cartier’s ‘Crash’ watch. One goes that, in the late 1960s, a client had entered the brand’s London boutique and presented a watch that had been mangled in a car crash, with a view to having it restored. Another is that a Cartier London employee had been involved in a car accident so severe that his gold watch had begun to melt. Whatever the truth, Cartier’s ‘Crash’ design radiates all the creative spirit of the time and place that spawned it. Imagined in 1967 by the Cartier London design studio, in the heat of London’s psychedelic art scene, this horological curio is revived periodically for special occasions. Thoughtful designers have been integrating leftover materials into their work for years, but the results aren’t always as alluring as these. OAO Works’ ’31.3 Polygon’ glassware is the result of a collaboration with a Czech glassmaker, who uses ancient colour formulas to make pieces and then supplies OAO Works with his leftovers. These pieces are used to make glasses and prisms in shapes derived from a mathematical problem known as five-fold tiling. Kvadrat’s ‘Re-wool’ has a simpler concept: a blend of 45 per cent new wool and 45 per cent leftover wool with 10 per cent nylon, it’s both smart and durable.…

Blurred, smudged, fuzzed, slept-in, make-out mouth, bedhead lips – all descriptions of the lip look that has dominated the catwalks this year. Championed by the likes of Pat McGrath and MAC’s Terry Barber, it relies on a weightless matt textured colour fractionally escaping the contour of the lips, looking like make-up that’s been lived in for weeks. Though deep in colour, it’s romantic and insouciant, the antithesis of the power lip. The market is now catching up with the catwalk and a new category of lipstick is emerging, populated by liquid powders with the perfect matt texture to give the right degree of neglect. Reissues have taken the furniture business by storm in recent years, as brands – including many Danish ones – scour the archives of late design greats for overlooked gems begging to be put back into production. Now Mater, the sustainably minded design label founded in Copenhagen in 2006, has joined the relaunch frenzy with a series of garden furniture by one of the most celebrated duos of Danish design, the late Nanna and Jørgen Ditzel. We were moved by the principles of biophilic design to create a space that seamlessly blends the domestic and the natural. Inspiration came from crafts-focused brand Another Country, whose ‘Ori’ mirror is hinged so it can be oriented to guide daylight into a room, thus engendering a sense of wellbeing. In a further attempt to bring the outside in, we looked at Swiss company WormUp, whose home composter is an elegant alternative to standard composting solutions, with its structure of modular, sleek burnt clay cylinders. Since co-founding accessories brand Tsatsas in 2012, Esther and Dimitrios Tsatsas have used German industrial designer Dieter Rams’ ‘Ten Principles for Good Design’ as guiding tenets. Putting these tenets to good use, the Frankfurt-based label has opted to put into production a handbag prototype that Rams created for his wife in 1963 while researching leather shaving case designs for Braun, but which was never released. More than 50 years on, Rams has collaborated with Tsatsas on a new version of the sleek leather bag. SALVATORE FERRAGAMO Guillaume Meilland cut his teeth at Yves Saint Laurent and Lanvin. This, his third collection for Florentine house Salvatore Ferragamo, was presented alongside the debut offering from newly appointed womenswear creative director Paul Andrew. Together, the duo devised a kaleidoscopic palette, which updated classic silhouettes in rich and unusual hues. Designed by New York studio Visibility, the packaging is a permanent piece of hardware that the user keeps, refilling with deodorising pods. The case, in five shades, elevates a not-so-glamorous routine, and is airport security-friendly and leakproof. It’s 20 years since Massive Attack released the groundbreaking Mezzanine. Still restless and forward-facing, founding member Robert ‘3D’ Del Naja has decided to can the landmark album by way of celebration. Working with scientists in Switzerland, he has encoded the digital bitstream of the album into strands of artificial DNA, encased them in microscopic glass beads and turned that into black paint (a nod to Del Naja’s sideline as a graffiti artist). The use of DNA to store digital information is actually one of science’s hottest research areas; a gram of double helixes could potentially store 500 billion gigs of data.
