Is it just me, or has the number of modified T4s being built fallen in recent times? Maybe it’s a reflection of the industry as a whole, but with second hand T4 values seemingly bottoming out at £500-£1,000, and even the really top drawer ones only just cresting the £10k mark, are they at risk of being overlooked entirely by newcomers to the fold? Add in the fact that rust is now really getting a grip on all but the most pampered pre-2003 Vans and I’m left wondering what the future is for T4s. Certainly the conversion industry appears to have largely forgotten about them and is instead hedging its bets with the more financially sound prospects that are T5 and T6 conversions instead, but what about individual modifiers? Ever since the swanky Sportline landed on UK shores at the start of 2017, the T6 has further reinforced its iconic status amongst modern day commercial vehicles. Apart from being a trendsetter that has spearheaded the movement of all manufacturers towards ‘sportier’ versions of their Vans, every OE manufacturer is trying to emulate VW’s success within the aftermarket leisure vehicle industry, too. Our recent visit to the Caravan, Camping and Motorhome Show really opened our eyes to this. Potential pitfalls

While the engine is obviously going to be brand new in a T6, so shouldn’t present any immediate problems, the 2.0TSi (EA888 Gen2 in the case of the T6) is already on the Gen3 version in VW’s latest MQB platform, and the earlier engines (pre-2011 mainly) are known to present a few issues over time. Don’t let this put you off, these are just things that have arisen over the years, and should now have been designed out in the latest revisions. Eagle-eyed readers might recognise one or two features of this build that remain from its first incarnation in 2015 but, for those who missed it, here’s an American TV style ‘previously in VWt’ moment. If you want to officially re-classify your Van as a Campervan or leisure vehicle with the DVLA, a working sink and stove are mandatory. Even if you only ever plan to use your sink to keep a kettle in – as we do – or to brush your teeth and have a quick spruce up following a heavy night at a show, it still makes a lot of sense to wire in a 12V submersible pump, micro-switch tap and a pair of water tanks – one for fresh, one for waste. Speed costs… Stefan Parker, Barnsley The age-old adage of speed costs, how fast do you want to go? is something Stefan Parker and the team at SRS Automotive know only too well. Stefan: This is our 2005 Caddy that has undergone some major changes in the last few months. What started out as a gearbox swap from a six-speed manual to a seven-speed 4motion DSG with Wavetrac diffs quickly spiralled out of control, and it now has a 2.0-litre 16v common rail engine conversion from a 2015 Tiguan, with a Darkside Developments (SRS’s next-door neighbours) GTD2872VR ballbearing turbo, race cams and some other mods to help handle the extra power. Some say it’s the latest version of the EA888 Gen3 engine (and not just because that features eight injectors with dual port injection), while others insist it’s a development of the Audi A4 (B8) EA888 Gen2 engine with variable valve lift (VVL). The latter is the truth, backed up by the fact the turbo upgrade path includes a Borg Warner K04-064 unit to replace the factory IHI RHF5 turbo. It’s snowing outside as we write this, so no doubt we’re due a heavy fall of snow-day photos of Transporters immersed in the white stuff. But in the meantime, we’ve been focussing on bikes and Vans. MTB, road, Cyclocross, Moto-X… whatever really, the Transporter was built to facilitate any number of cycling-based outdoor pursuits, so this month we’ve pulled a velocipede-themed ‘lifestyle’ Cool wall together, and more could follow in its tyre tracks.
