On the other hand, is there anything more hellish than tossing and turning all night in the grip of insomnia? Shakespeare called sleep “nature’s soft nurse”, which is true on all levels. MARMITE & CHEDDAR WELSH RAREBIT Winter comfort food doesn’t get much better than this Serves 2 4 slices sourdough 20g unsalted butter 20g plain flour 200ml amber ale 100g mature cheddar, finely grated, plus extra for sprinkling 1–2 tsp Marmite, to taste 1 Preheat grill to high. Toast the sourdough, either under the grill or in a toaster. 2 Put the butter in a small saucepan over a medium heat. Once the butter has completely melted, add the flour and beat to a thick paste with a wooden spoon. 3 Still on the heat, add a splash of the ale and beat in. My almanac was inspired by a holiday to Cornwall. We were staying in a tiny shack with big views, in the dunes at Hayle. The story so far I spent 12 years working in advertising but eventually the fun had been had, so I quit. I started my blog, Gluts & Gluttony, which was born out of a passion for growing food organically and an inability to grow sensible quantities of it. This depends on whether the inhabitants are animal or human and what sort of behaviour is involved. 1 Blood orange sage margarita Makes 1 125ml blood orange juice 2 tbsp freshly squeezed lime juice 1 tbsp hibiscus syrup (see below) 2 sage leaves, plus another to garnish Ice cubes A wedge of lime Himalayan salt For the syrup (makes 500ml) 500ml water 90g granulated sugar 35g light brown sugar 12g dried hibiscus flowers Zest of 1 lemon You will need Cocktail shaker Chilled coupette 1 First make the syrup.
