JAKE WOOD FOUNDED TEAM RUBICON A YEAR AFTER RETURNING FROM AFGHANISTAN, WHERE HE SERVED AS A MARINE SNIPER. It was January 12, 2010. Wood, then 26, was in boxers on his couch in Burbank, California, when, 16 miles west of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, a previously unmapped fault line ruptured. The resulting 7.0-magnitude earthquake killed at least 160,000 people and displaced one million more. By week’s end, Wood was in the disaster zone, helping to splint the compound fracture of a 14-yearold girl and curing his post-deployment boredom with the comfort of chaos. Cherise Tuttle Before launching from a 10,500-foot ridge on Mardi Himal, in Nepal’s Annapurna Range, California photographer Cody Tuttle handed the camera to his wife, Cherise. THIS YEAR, OLYMPIC organizers will introduce an ultrafast catamaran in the mixed multi hull sailing category, one of ten classes in which sailors will compete. Like the bigger catamarans that race in the America’s Cup, the Nacra 17 employs curved daggerboards, or foils. They enable 30-mile-per-hour speeds and make the 17-foot boats appear to be flying. “If the previous catamarans were Indy cars, these are like Formula One,” says 40-year-old U.S. helmsman Bora Gulari, who lives in Detroit. Gulari, a two-time world champion in the Moth class of foil-equipped sailing dinghies, started sailing the Nacra last May. AFTER WINNING bronze in the 10,000 meters at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, Shalane Flanagan surprised many by switching to the marathon. “I felt like I’d reached a pinnacle and a new challenge would be fun,” she says. Flanagan’s mother once held the American marathon record. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the 34-year-old has excelled. She came in first at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials, won the 2010 and 2012 U.S. championships, and placed third at the 2014 Berlin Marathon with a time of 2:21:14—the second-fastest ever by an American woman. The team has worked with Olympians before; they built sensors for long jumpers to check their form and delivered the lightning-fast two-man bobsleds that enabled the United States to break a six-decade medal drought in Sochi. But this is their first time tackling a wheeled rig.
