Thanks to the New York Public Library’s tremendous LGBT photo archives, we’ve been given a glimpse of the luminaries who’ve shaped the queer movements of the 20th century. One such collection, from the International Gay Information Center archives, is “Particular Voices: Portraits of Gay and Lesbian Writers,” a stunning cache of images by Robert Giard. As the evocative portraits show, Giard managed to capture a beautifully diverse spectrum of queer minds, from Quentin Crisp to Sapphire. Each photo features a different writer whose distinct contributions helped define his or her generation—and, by extension, our history.…

INFLUENCED by the skate scene and heavy metal, Melbourne artist Stephen Baker brings a minimalist’s approach to his art, taking urban landscapes, or something as familiar as a magazine cover, and abstracting them into striking geometric patterns. His subtle color palette—think pale pastels—helps to soften the bold lines, while creating an impression of stained-glass windows. It seems hardly possible that Meryl Meisler could make the kind of work today that animated her camera in the 1970s. Her scenes are so uncontrived, her subjects so guileless and natural as to evoke L.P. Hartley’s famous observation that “The past is foreign country: they do things differently there.” Meisler, who pivoted from photographing her Long Island community to shooting New York’s queer scene after she came out in 1975, fully captures the decade’s tawdriness and kitsch in some 35 black-and-white prints on display at the Steven Kasher Gallery, in Manhattan, until April 9.…

AS A YOUNG photographer in 1980s San Francisco, Catherine Opie became fascinated by the “X Portfolio,” Robert Mapplethorpe’s visceral portraits of bondage and sadomasochism. After making friends with a gallery owner who represented Mapplethorpe, Opie, a member of the S&M community, visited time after time to privately view the images. “I took lots of photographs throughout the ’80s, especially black-and-white photographs, and they were never really good enough.
