Tall-rounders come in a variety of different specs and price points, so if you're on a budget there are ways to make these models more affordable. The Versys 1100, for example, comes in three main versions: base, S, and SE. Starting at £11,899 for the intro model, then rising to £13,649 for the S, and £15,649 for the SE minus luggage. These three machines show that there is genuine variety in the latest tall-rounder class. BMW's S1000XR TE has a lot going for it: immense performance, engaging handling, all-day comfort, and an overall feel of solid quality. But it's expensive. Even in base spec it's over £800 more than the top-spec Versys. And almost £2500 up on the GX. As tested it's a hefty £5871 more than the Suzuki. While the BMW is a strong package, it's not that much better than the GSX-S. Kawasaki's Versys is arguably in a slightly different category to the other two. 'Net is closing on rogue kit' As in previous years, I visited this past weekend's Devitt Insurance MCN London Motorcycle Show to provide technical support to London Borough of Newham Trading Standards. Our first visit, in February 2022, was a watershed moment. Even though the regulation had been in place for nearly four years, nonconforming motorcycle clothing was still being placed on the market. Goods were ordered to be removed from sale and infringements were referred to the traders' local Trading Standards for follow-up. It sent out shockwaves. For the remainder of 2022, Trading Standards activity continued nationwide and by that September's Copdock Show, in Ipswich, nonconforming clothing was almost entirely eradicated. Q 'Pedestrian versus scooter' I was riding my scooter home from work when traffic was queuing in front of me. As there were no cars coming the other way, I filtered past the queue at about 25mph. An elderly gentleman walked out from between the traffic into my path and I came off. I only had minor injuries, but my bike was damaged. A witness confirmed it was not my fault. I've been keeping an eye on the MotoGP testing, but what I can't get over is how the bikes look. What I've always loved about race bikes was that they were pure function, it wasn't what they looked like, it was what they could do. 'A handy tool for rooting out problems…' If you've gone through the various steps to check and measure your bike's compression, then the chances are that you are probably trying to identify a problem. It could be due to a number of reasons, including the feeling that the bike is running unevenly, or perhaps you feel that the engine is lacking in its response. In the case of this 1998 Honda CBR600, I was trying to find the possible cause of poor starting. 'Great banter at the MCN Show' Just back from the Devitt Insurance MCN London Show and what a weekend it was. I was racing all weekend with the guys including Whit, Chris and Neil and the banter continued all the way home. We were saying how we hadn't laughed that much for a long time. We're all at a stage where we've got our own agendas in life but to have breakfast together, race bikes in the day and then have a few beers in the evening is as good as it gets. I miss that in racing, so I spend my whole three days at the show like a dog with two dicks. There's literally nothing not to like. I did two stage shows and three races a day…
