A MURDER accused in an apparent road rage incident that involved fighting, multiple stabbings, gunshots and a person being run over by a bakkie, intends to apply for bail, after his co-accused was denied bail in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court yesterday. THREE adjacent shanties were destroyed by a fire that local residents battled to bring under control during an extended water interruption. The homeowner in Cedar Road, Florianville narrowly missed having his house reduced to a pile of ashes when the fire broke out in his backyard on January 28. Community members were requested to assist the families who lost all their belongings in the fire. The affected households included four young children and a one-month-old baby. A 48-YEAR-old man, Manus Kordom, has been sentenced to 19 years imprisonment for housebreaking and the rape of a 52-year-old woman who was busy taking a nap. Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam said the Pofadder Magistrate’s Court sentenced Kordom to seven years for housebreaking and 12 years for rape. “The incident occurred on April 27, 2019, in Pella. The court heard that the accused, who is known to the woman, gained entrance to the house and raped her while she was taking a nap after doing some chores at a friend’s house. THE PROFESSIONAL Association for Traditional Health Practitioners of South Africa (PATHPSA) has slammed what it regards as “reckless behaviour” by some traditional healers following the drowning of two members from Kimberley on January 27. The two traditional healers - 25-year-old Mpho Emily Mofokeng and 35-year-old Letlhogonolo “Chaka” Kock - drowned in the river near Barkly West on Saturday. The two were part of a group that was performing traditional rituals in the river. WITH a total of 51 recorded fatalities during the 2022/23 Festive Season Road Safety campaign and 43 road fatalities during the 2023/24 campaign, the Northern Cape Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison said that the latest statistics have shown a significant reduction in road fatalities. The head of communications at the department, Rennie Andrias, said fatal crashes on the Province’s roads have declined by 33% and the number of fatalities have declined by 16%.
