Yet today you can buy any of these models for less than £20,000. The reason, of course, is shaky demand for electric vehicles (EVs) in the wake of a blizzard of negative stories in certain parts of the media. But the good news is that those stories are largely nonsense. You’ve probably read, for example, that EVs have a habit of spontaneously combusting. However, a recent study found they suffer just 25 fires per 100,000 vehicles, whereas petrol and diesel cars are involved in 1530 fires per 100,000. DUMBO MAY BE an elephant, but (through the power of animation) he can fly. And while electric SUVs sometimes seem elephantine, a good few of them can move with remarkable pace. Could the new Peugeot e-3008 Dual Motor be a new member of that club? Well, the words ‘Dual Motor’ tend to signify that an electric SUV can get a shift on. The Polestar 4 Long Range Dual Motor, for instance, dispatches 0-62mph in just 3.8sec. And as with that car, the e-3008 Dual Motor has one motor to drive the front wheels and another for the rears. That endows it with a sporty-sounding 321bhp total output – around 100bhp more than the front-wheel-drive, single-motor e-3008 can muster. AFTER STARTING OUT selling only physical books, Amazon’s reinvention as an online retailer of virtually anything must be one of the most successful business evolutions in history. Smart’s reinvention, too, has been near-total; from being a maker of tiny petrol-powered city cars, it has become a purveyor of upmarket electric SUVs. And now, the 4.7-metre-long #5 family SUV is the biggest departure yet from the cars with which Smart made its name. The #5 line-up starts with the entry-level Pro. With 335bhp, 0-62mph takes it 6.9sec; that’s slower than the Tesla Model Y RWD but more than quick enough for everyday driving. WHAT DOES THE Nissan Micra have in common with Madonna? Well, like that pop icon, it met with instant success when it made its debut in 1982. Indeed, owners loved the Micra because it was compact, easy to drive and affordable to buy and run. CHANEL No5 IS a giant in the world of luxury perfumes, and it might have been one of the inspirations behind the facelifted DS 4, which aims to reinforce the French brand’s upmarket ambitions with the help of a new name. Related to the Citroën C4 and Peugeot 308 (among other models), the new No4 is a premium family hatchback that offers a variety of electrified power options – including, for the the first time, a fully electric version. TOYOTA IS PLANNING to move away from selling standalone electric vehicles (EVs), such as the bZ4X SUV, and will instead offer each of its mainstream models with a choice of hybrid and fully electric power. THE COST OF driving in central London is set to go up. Transport for London (TfL) is proposing an increase in the Congestion Charge to £18 per day – a £3 hike over the current fee, which was set in 2020. Under the proposals, drivers of electric cars will be eligible for a 25% discount from 2 January 2026 if their vehicle is registered for Auto Pay. There is currently a 100% discount for all electric vehicles (EVs) driving within the zone, although TfL has already confirmed that this will end on 24 December this year. Electric vans, HGVs and quadricycles using Auto Pay will be eligible for a 50% discount, because commercial deliveries are harder to do on foot, or by bicycle or public transport. MODERN CARS SUFFER far fewer breakdowns than those of a generation ago. However, they’re certainly not infallible, so it’s best to know who to turn to if you do find yourself with a misbehaving vehicle. WHILE THOMAS EDISON is generally credited with inventing the lightbulb, the rather less-celebrated Warren de la Rue actually got there first. IMAGINE A MASTER chef taking their nearperfect signature dish, then combing the larder for ever-rarer ingredients, before assembling them meticulously and seasoning for even more culinary punch. AS IF TO tap in on the Hyrox fitness craze that currently has a grip on social media, the updated Audi A3 TFSIe plug-in hybrid (PHEV) has been honing its strength and endurance. Like swollen muscles, its battery has grown from 10.4kWh to 19.7kWh (usable capacity). This extends its official electric range from 40 miles to 88 miles, matching the official figure of the related Volkswagen Golf eHybrid and trouncing the Mercedes-Benz A250e (52 miles) and Toyota Prius (up to 47 miles). It also means a low (6%) company car tax rating. What’s more, the battery can now charge at a rate of up to 40kW using a public charger. That’s handy if you need a quick range boost, but it won’t be as cheap as using a slower (7kW)…

AUDI A6 BUYERS ARE already spoilt for choice; as well as petrol and mild hybrid dieselpowered versions, there’s also a wholly separate electric model that shares the same name. And now, on top of those, there’s a new A6 with plug-in hybrid (PHEV) power. Available exclusively with quattro fourwheel drive, the A6 e-hybrid gets the same plug-in hybrid set-up as the smaller Audi A5, combining a 2.0-litre petrol engine with an electric motor for a total power output of 295bhp. THE UK’S LARGEST car parking companies have united to create a ‘one app fits all’ payment system so that drivers won’t need to download apps for multiple providers. Following a series of Government-backed trials, the National Parking Platform (NPP) is now set to roll out across the UK. It is operated by the British Parking Association, which will take on the costs of running the app. However, the system will be available to use only in car parks that choose to sign up. These include those run by RingGo, Just Park and Pay by Phone, which currently operate separate phone apps. OVER THE YEARS, the Audi SQ5 has been doing the automotive equivalent of the Hokey Cokey. Or, more specifically, its engine bay has. You see, when this performance version of Audi’s Q5 family SUV was first introduced in 2012, its USP was that it used a diesel engine, so it could be frugal as well as fast. But then when the second-generation SQ5 arrived in 2017, diesel power was out and petrol was in. By 2019, the petrol was gone and a diesel was back under the bonnet. SMALL DOGS, SUCH as the famously cheeky Jack Russell terrier, can be bigger in personality than they are in stature, and the new Fiat Grande Panda Hybrid gives off the same energy. This small SUV’s chunky shape and retro design touches give it enough of an identity to make itself noticed among the big dogs of what is a verycompetitive class. Who are those big dogs, exactly? Well, the main mastiffs are the Dacia Duster and Seat Arona, which are similarly priced to the Grande Panda Hybrid. IF YOU’VE BEEN looking for a (relatively) cheap electric car, you’ve probably noticed that there’s a big gap in the market. The Dacia Spring and Leapmotor T03 are priced at £15k to £16k, but they’re tiny and feel out of their depth at higher speeds. And if you want something bigger and less compromised, you’ll need to find at least £22k for a Citroën e-C3 or £23k for a Renault 5 (R5). Well, the new BYD Dolphin Surf will soon bridge that gap. WHEN JOHN COOPER started tuning Minis back in the early 1960s, he turned an everyday, affordable family car into something that was fast, great to drive and able to defeat far more powerful foes. At its core, that’s the ethos of every hot hatchback. It isn’t an easy recipe to perfect, though – just look at the underwhelming petrol Mini John Cooper Works (JCW) – and it’s even harder to apply to an electric car.
