SUBARU HAS ONE of the most loyal customer bases of any car company; its Forester SUV is said to have a repeat ownership rate of 70%, with owners being hooked on its durability and off-road credentials. That’s as may be, but the Forester remains a niche choice in the UK, with just 2419 cars sold last year. To put that into context, Kia sold 46,163 Sportages over the same period. So, how to attract more buyers without alienating the regulars? IN CASE YOU’RE wondering, it’s pronounced ‘tieron’. But although the Volkswagen Tayron is a new name for us, this SUV that can seat up to seven might seem familiar in a lot of ways, because it shares its underpinnings with the latest Tiguan family SUV and is a slightly larger replacement for the outgoing Tiguan Allspace. As in the Tiguan, the petrol engine line-up consists of a 148bhp 1.5-litre mild hybrid, and 201 and 261bhp 2.0-litre units with four-wheel drive. IT’S SAFE TO say that the Porsche Cayenne was met with some scepticism from car enthusiasts when it was first launched – mostly because the concept of a performance SUV didn’t really exist up until that point, and it especially wasn’t expected from a sports car brand like Porsche. But the Cayenne has gone on to be Porsche’s best-selling model, and the German brand will be hoping to replicate that success with the introduction of an all-new, fully electric model. Rather than replacing the current petrol and hybrid versions of the Cayenne, the electric model will be sold alongside them beyond 2030. IN THE SAME way that early life forms ventured out of the swamp and sea on to terra firma, becoming increasingly sophisticated and diverse in the process, so too have SUVs. These often rugged-looking models have thrown off the shackles of their off-road-focused forebears to become right at home on the Tarmac. But while you might argue that the original – and largely forgotten – Toyota Urban Cruiser was a bit of a dinosaur, the rebooted version benefits from nearly 20 years of evolution. HOW’S THE WEATHER? If you’re in the UK, there’s a fair chance it’s overcast or raining. Indeed, you’d think that our stereotypically wet weather wouldn’t lend itself to open-top motoring, yet we remain one of the Mini Cooper Convertible’s biggest markets. Why? Well, along with the Convertible’s advantages on sunny days, it shares the Mini 3dr hatch back’s everyday usability when the weather isn’t quite as favourable. IN THE WORLD of sports cars, performance matters. So, the fact that the latest iteration of the Porsche 911 Carrera S can accelerate from 0-62mph in as little as 3.3sec – 0.6sec up on the standard Carrera and quicker than the rival Aston Martin Vantage and Mercedes-AMG GT – is something worth bragging about. Like the regular Carrera, the S is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre flat six petrol engine that drives the rear wheels, but its 473bhp power output is almost 100bhp up on that of the entry-level model, and 30bhp more than the previous Carrera S produced. DRIVERS WHO TAKE too long to pay fees in private car parks controlled by automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras will no longer be hit with fines. That’s thanks to new rules imposed following a review by the Private Parking Scrutiny and Advice Panel. Drivers previously faced a fine of up to £100 if they didn’t pay within five minutes of entry. Now they will have until they leave to pay, to ensure that “motorists who face genuine difficulties in paying in a short timeframe are treated fairly”. HYUNDAI KNOWS A thing or two about building seven-seat SUVs. The Santa Fe, which is about to celebrate its 25th birthday, has long offered good-value transport for big families – and we reckon the latest version is the best seven-seater you can buy. THE NEW MERCEDES-BENZ CLA is the first model to be built on the brand’s new MMA mechanicals, and that’s appropriate, because it’s a car that’s positively spoiling for a fight. IN 1998, KELLOGG’S changed the name of Coco Pops to Choco Krispies in the UK, bringing the popular breakfast cereal into line with the way it appeared in Europe. A QUARTER OF drivers who are dazzled by the headlights of oncoming vehicles are staying off the roads more at night, according to new research released by the RAC. IF VARIETY IS the spice of life, then Alfa Romeo’s Junior line-up just got a bit more flavourful. That’s because it’s now available with petrol power with this new Ibrida hybrid version, alongside the existing all-electric model. The Ibrida will act as the new entry point into the Junior range. It uses the same mild hybrid engine set-up as in its stablemates from within the Stellantis group, such as the Citroën C4, Fiat 600 and Jeep Avenger. This combines a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a 28bhp electric motor and a six-speed automatic gearbox. VOLVO MADE ITS name with sensible saloon and estate cars long before SUVs were a thing, but it’s been almost two years since the S90 executive car departed showrooms. In 2026, though, its successor will arrive, as a sleek, technology-focused saloon that breaks away from the Swedish brand’s SUV-dominated line-up – and it’ll be electric. When it goes on sale next year, three versions of the ES90 will be available. The entry-level Single Motor version will be powered by an 88kWh (usable capacity) battery, with rear-wheel drive, 329bhp and a 0-62mph time of 6.9sec. FROM 2016 TO 2017, Apple offered a tiny Shuffle version of its iPod MP3 player. In the interest of miniaturisation, it was extremely simple, with no display and few controls. And the same was true of the new Volkswagen ID 1’s predecessor. THE DAYS WHEN you could break into most cars with a metal coat hanger may be long gone, but according to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), 61,343 vehicles were reported stolen in the UK in 2024. Although this is a 6% reduction on the previous year, it’s the third-highest figure in the past decade and more than twice the number stolen in 2015. The 2024 figure equates to 168 cars stolen every day, seven cars stolen every hour, or one stolen every 8.5 minutes. BIGGER, FASTER, HARDER, stronger. Life in the 2020s demands more of everything, so in many ways the Volkswagen ID 7 is the right car for the age.
