Pillar of society
THE RUMA, KUALA LUMPUR
This 253-room hotel, in Kuala Lumpur’s Golden Triangle, has been outfitted by the Shanghai-based firm MQ Studio, which has created an urban retreat that references Malaysia’s colourful history: lattice patterns are a nod to traditional chequered sarongs, the pillars at the entrance have been salvaged from historic local homes, and details such as the copper ceilings, lamps and grand spiral staircase tell of the country’s tin mining history. Guest rooms, some with views of the Petronas Towers, feature a colonial aesthetic, with lots of rattan, and there’s also an infinity pool and a spa with a Truefitt & Hill barber. Lauren Ho
