When we paired London-based Norwegian designer Kim Thomé with Sarah Watson of bathroom specialist Balineum on a commission to make a mirror for the Hotel Wallpaper* bathroom, they agreed on one thing: no one looks good in a magnifying mirror. ‘That was our starting point,’ says Thomé. ‘We both agreed that we don’t like magnifying mirrors – they tend to give you a shock when you look in them. Lensvelt’s flair for producing discreet office and home furniture was a perfect foil for the abstract stylings of Swiss studio PlueerSmitt, which created a small storage unit for valuables that reinvents the room safe. A wall-mounted shelf unit features a front cover overlaid with a tight vertical grid in anodised aluminium; the precision of the grid means that, while the said valuables are technically in plain view, they create an abstract image of lines and colours that changes depending on angle and distance. When it came to giving the humble hotel bath soap a makeover, we looked to Brooklyn-based design studio Pelle. Soon after forming in 2011, the firm, run by husband-and-wife team Oliver and Jean Pelle, made waves with a range of faceted, gem-like soaps. Handmade at Pelle’s Red Hook premises, the glycerine Soap Stones, as the line is called, quickly became a mainstay of museum shops and design boutiques alike. ‘I’ve [always] played with bars of soap. The hills around Mutoko contain a 50-100m-thick horizontal bed of what geologists call noritic dolerite and the locals call black granite. Since the 1970s, giant earth-moving equipment has rumbled around the town’s quarries, carting off huge grey blocks that, once cut and polished, become the finest Nero Assoluto (Absolute Black) granite. ‘I had in mind a very technical aesthetic, like a gear mechanism’ Parisian designer Victoria Wilmotte chose the name Edgar for her contemporary take on a hotel reception bell because it seemed to her that Edgar sounded like the kind of name you associate with a discreetly powerful hotel servant. ‘Edgar’ would be the concierge who gets you a late reservation in a popular restaurant, or tickets for a sold-out show. These may be used individually or configured together to make storage and display units. The concrete tray, cast by Graphic Relief, features waterjetted geometric perforations to allow the LED light source to shine through, and comes with glassware by Brooklyn studio Pier Glass. See the finished exhibition piece on page 156 Checking into Hotel Wallpaper*, this year’s Handmade exhibition at the Salone del Mobile in Milan, proved to be an awe-inspiring experience: a passageway lined with enormous aluminium shapes, bathed in coloured light. The installation was a collaborative effort between a top aluminium supplier, a leader in creative aluminium treatment, and one of the world’s greatest architects. The Wallpaper* event occupied an arcade in via San Gregorio, for the second year. ‘A humble location,’ says Alex Rasmussen, president of the Santa Barbara-based aluminium fabricator Neal Feay Company, describing it as a ‘crummy, post-war Italian condominium complex’ with ‘oddball storefronts’ and dog-walking residents passing through on their way to the lifts. So it comes as no surprise that his five-hole ‘One Point’ minigolf course for Hotel Wallpaper* features obstacles that are as much individual works of art as they are light-hearted entertainment. From a series of overlapping circles to a single sloping rectangle, each of the five miniature fairways has been painstakingly landscaped by layering lightweight honeycomb metal panels with a smooth carpet surface by Swedish flooring brand Bolon.
