Back in 1986, when Safer Motoring magazine had become VW Motoring, 21 members of the London Centre of VWOC (GB) set out on a memorable trip to what was, after Germany, the second Mecca of Beetle production. As editor, I had arranged for a report on this ambitious two weeks of immersion in the Mexican VW scene.
Arranged by well-known clubman, Tony Levy, the event had been threatened prior to departure, not only by his temporary illness but also by a major earthquake that laid waste to an area of Mexico City, costing the lives of some 7500 people.
