Fifty years ago, the BBC aired the first episode of Fawlty Towers, the sitcom co-written by and starring John Cleese as irascible Torquay hotelier Basil Fawlty, alongside Prunella Scales as his wife Sybil, co-writer Connie Booth as maid Polly, and Andrew Sachs as confused Spanish waiter Manuel.
The show, which only ran for two series, would become one of the all-time favourite comedies, and has since been reimagined as a hit stage play. And to mark the anniversary, a recording of the West End production is being shown on U&Gold.
