At the Smithfield Show in December 1964, the Ford Motor Company launched the exciting new ‘6X’ range of tractors that would quickly become known as the 1000 Series. Initially the range made available to British farmers included the 2000, 3000, 4000 and 5000 models, and all were built at Ford’s shiny new factory at Basildon, in Essex. The models – producing 37, 46, 55 and 65hp respectively – featured new engines and transmission options plus distinctive, modern styling. They were intentionally different from the Fordson models they succeeded which, of course, were built at the old Dagenham plant. We were asked by Wilders, then the Ford dealer in Reading, to look at a job in the heart of London; in fact on the Thames, in Deptford. There was, at that time in the 1970s, a large company called Convoys which operated from a significant and very historical dock area. The site is still known as the Convoys Dock, but it’s no longer active in its original form. During the 1970s, when most people took a daily paper, there was a massive demand for the appropriate paper on which to print the ‘dailies’. Much of this came in from Scandinavia by ship, supplied in huge rolls. The logistics of this supply and delivery process were pretty slick and, of course, the ships needed to be turned around as fast…

With the end of this engine restoration project in sight, the final item to be dealt with was the cylinder head. When I’d removed it originally it was in a fairly filthy state, and the reports that I got back from Bromsgrove Engine Services were that it required a fair bit of work. This didn’t surprise me, though, as the whole engine had clearly led a relatively hard working life. However, the head was returned to me in absolutely spotless condition, with all the original paint clearly visible; it was particularly nice to see the red oxide. RESTORATION NEWS Jim Akehurst from Bexhill-on-Sea, in East Sussex, is working hard to have his 1948 Nuffield M4 petrol/paraffin (No. NT521, possibly the second or third oldest example known), on the road in time for the annual Boxing Day Six Bells Road Run, at Cross-in-Hand, E. Sussex. Jim bought the tractor in 2021 from a local dealer who was intending to scrap it because of the badly frost-damaged engine. However, given its low number, Jim decided to take on the challenge and save the tractor. It’s not been a straightforward process. As well as the damaged engine, the steering shaft and bonnet were completely smashed by a collapsing barn sometime in the past. SCALE MODEL NEWS The 1/32 die cast New Holland T5.120 Dual Command with front loader 655 LU is made using 149 parts and 207 tampoprinting operations. It’s a complete new tooling, which represents the new T5 with front loader in its 2025 version. It was a very cold day in January, 1985, and a great deal of snow had fallen in my village in north-east Suffolk. It seems, looking back, that the mid-1980s had some rather bad winters compared with recent times, and it was usually the case that at least twice during January and February, so much snow would fall that the wind would make it drift and completely fill the country roads between the hedgerows, making them impassable and cutting off rural communities. This was where the local farmers came in, as they had the machinery available that would allow for rapid clearance of the offending snow drifts. Progress with the MF 550 has been rather slow of late, partly due to the inclement weather and other, late-summer distractions. With the interior of the cab stripped out and parts lying around, I felt it was time to get back into the swing and begin the refitting process. Before working on the cab, a decision was made to remove the fuel tank as a safety measure while undertaking the cutting-out of corroded metal and welding in new. Most of this work is now complete, particularly on the left-hand side, where the fuel tank is situated, so an opportunity to put the tank back in was taken. SEPTEMBER 21st, 2024 It was as though the whole of Ireland had descended on Berry Farm at Stoke Poges, in Berkshire, for this well run and promoted Commercial Vehicle Auctions event. The late Tony McGovern came from a farm in County Leitrim, Republic of Ireland, to the UK when he was 17. After spells as a labourer and lorry driver, he and his brother, Peter, started their own haulage business in 1967. The business grew and grew until it was sold in 2018, by which time the pair had established an impressive fleet of preserved lorries and prize-winning tractors. There were implements in the collection, too, and those sold here included a well-restored Ferguson earth scoop for £700 and the three-ton Ferguson tipping trailer with new wood (grade 5) that…

MACHINERY SHOW NEWS The latest Massey Ferguson 5M tractor will be shown in the UK for the first time as the brand returns to LAMMA for the second year in a row. The new MF 5M series has six versatile and cost-effective models from 95hp to 145hp. It builds on the successful and popular MF 5700 M series, in the efficient, small tractor sector aimed at livestock, arable and vegetable producers. How far do you have to travel to to your cherished, classic tractor? Do you keep in a garage next to your house, or perhaps it’s in a shed that’s just a short walk across the farmyard. Alternatively, maybe you have no space at home so rent a barn or workshop on a farm a short drive from home. However, I imagine that very few of you keep your tractor in a different country! 9th-10th November, 2024 Thankfully the weather remained dry for this year’s Newark Vintage Tractor & Heritage Show, which was a bonus for early November! The event attracted a very good crowd and I met visitors from all parts of the UK as well as Southern Ireland, The Netherlands and even Canada. As always, it was a great place to socialise and catch up with old friends before finally battening down the hatches for the winter months ahead. This year’s main feature was the Friends of Ferguson Heritage club’s ‘Diamonds Are Forever Jubilee Celebration’ to mark 60 years of the iconic Massey Ferguson 135 (1964-79). 12th-13th October, 2024 The weather on the first day of this year’s British National Ploughing Championships, held on the Thoresby Estate at Perlethorpe, near Ollerton, in Nottinghamshire, was certainly changeable. Heavy showers greeted the competitors as they set their opening furrows out at 10am in the sandy loam soil which, in places, was rather stony. However, by 2pm when the plots had to be finished, the sun was out for a brighter afternoon. Unfortunately, with many of the tractors involved being cabless, plenty of drivers received a good soaking, but kept smiling as they battled on! The site was excellent, as were the marshals and the friendly members of The Society of Ploughmen, led by the ever-jolly and courteous chairman, Mark Turner. Pulley fitting issue FORDSON DESIGN DIFFERENCES Q I have a 1955 Fordson Major E1A that I’ve been restoring, and I’ve been looking around for any period accessories that will make the tractor more complete. It has never had a belt pulley unit fitted, and at a recent sale I managed to obtain one, as I’d like to use the tractor for cutting firewood in the future. I’ve painted the pulley unit and have attempted to install it, but it won’t sit flat against the mounting flange. I have tried unsuccessfully two or three times, but there’s no way it’ll fit. Many tractors arrive at my workshop complete with a container of some sort that’s strapped underneath to catch the oil that’s dripping out from the back of the sump. I’ve often wondered if, once full, owners would tip the contents back into the engine so that it can leak out all over again? Or was it simply left to slosh out everywhere, defeating the original objective? Anyway, in the case of this Fordson Major, seeing the old tin can rather crudely tied under the machine signalled to me that I needed to get inside the clutch housing and fit a new seal. NOVEMBER 16TH, 2024 Selling preservation tractors in Scotland has never been easy, but the internet has made life easier for sales north of the border. This event saw a fine collection of just 30 assorted machines go under the hammer, with a good number of them selling. The first lot was a lovely and well-restored Wrigley 209 horticultural threewheel tipper with connections to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. It had been based at Balmoral Castle and later at Edinburgh Zoo, and was presented in superb, grade 6 condition. Yet it sold for just £650. The bidding for a patina-style, 1955 Fordson E1A Major reached £1,900, then a 1962 MF 35 (diff lock, grade 2) sold for £2,600. A 1959 David Brown 2D (grade 3) made £1,000, while a ‘no reserve’…

“I got my first tractor when I was 10; it was a Ferguson TE-D 20 and I used to love driving it around our bit of land in first gear. Then, as I got older and more confident, I started using the faster gears, which was very exciting. That Fergie has since been restored and I’ve taken it to many shows.
