In several African countries, the number of children receiving school meals from the government has increased by 30% since 2022, according to a report from the World Food Programme (WFP). About 87 million children in countries including Ethiopia, Madagascar, and Chad are now receiving meals.
Across the continent, about 307 million Africans are chronically malnourished due to climate change, conflicts, and high food prices. In the past, many African countries relied heavily on foreign aid from partners like the US, France, and the UK to feed their people. That aid has recently been reduced, however, and African governments have expanded funding instead.
