PURPLE EMPEROR BUTTERFLIES
On 1 July, a record-breaking 283 purple emperors, a rare type of butterfly, were seen at Knepp, a nature conservation project in West Sussex, England. Experts think the high number of purple emperors indicates higher numbers of the butterflies nationwide.

On 8 July, the National Lottery Heritage Fund announced that Amgueddfa Lechi Cymru (the National Slate Museum) in Gwynedd, Wales, is being given £12 million. Jane Richardson from Museum Wales said the news was exciting “for us, for the wider community, and for everyone in Wales”.
