From late June, European countries including France, Germany, Greece, Italy and Spain experienced a heatwave, with temperatures higher than 40° C in many areas. A heatwave is an extended period of hot weather, which is hotter than is usual for a particular time of year.
Southern Spain was the worst affected area. A new heat record for June of 46° C was set on 28 June in the town of El Granado. In the west of Turkey, 50,000 people had to leave their homes after wildfires broke out. In France, 1,350 schools closed because of the high temperatures, and the top of the Eiffel Tower, a famous landmark in Paris, was closed to tourists because of safety concerns.
