Indian PM visits crash site

At least 288 people have died and more than 1,000 people were hurt after a train crash in India on 2 June. The accident involved three trains in the state of Odisha, in the north-eastern part of the country. It is thought to be the worst train crash in India for more than 20 years. What happened? A train called the Coromandel Express, travelling at 80 miles per hour, moved off a main track and onto a side track that is used to park trains. It hit a goods train that was not moving. Plan for universal basic income

A group of 30 people could be given £1,600 each, every month for two years, to see what effect this has on their health. The money, called a “universal basic income” (UBI), would be given to them whether they are working or not. People in Jarrow, in north-east England, and East Finchley, in London, will be chosen for the trial. The plan has been put forward by Autonomy, a research organisation that is working alongside charity Local Trust and researchers at Northumbria University. TV presenter James Stewart is on a mission to offer hope to young people in the fight to protect planet Earth. Stewart is known for his work on the BBC, CBBC and CBeebies. Stewart told The Week Junior that lots of the media coverage of climate change (changing weather patterns that can cause problems such as droughts and floods) is too negative. “There is still time, there are still chances to make changes,” he said. Seagulls watch what we eat

Have you ever had your lunch stolen by a cheeky seagull at the beach? Whether it’s fish and chips, an ice cream or a sandwich, seagulls seem to love swooping and snatching humans’ food. However, a study shows that it is not a myth: seagulls really are more likely to steal food if they see humans eating it first. Scientists from the University of Sussex carried out their research at Brighton beach, on the south coast of England. A beluga whale spotted off the coast of Sweden has been accused of being a Russian spy. Hvaldimir was first seen in 2019 near Norway, wearing a harness with a clip that could hold a camera. Scientists find earliest evidence of the plague

The plague may have come to Britain 4,000 years ago, which is much earlier than historians thought. Scientists studied the teeth of skeletons in two Bronze Age burial sites – Charterhouse Warren Farm in Somerset and Levens Park in Cumbria, both in England. The Bronze Age was when humans began to use metals. Three of the teeth sample had traces of Yersinia pestis, the bacteria (tiny organism) that causes the plague. The team say the traces couldn’t infect anyone today. Although these people from 4,000 years ago carried plague, the study of their bodies show that they probably died of other causes. Professor Rick Schulting, who worked on the study, told The Guardian newspaper, “The finding of plague was completely unexpected, as this disease leaves no traces on the skeleton.”…

The cast for a UK tour of Shrek the Musical has been announced and includes a former star of Strictly Come Dancing. Norwegian report reveals a cruel past

Norway’s parliament has published a report showing that indigenous communities in the country have been treated badly. Indigenous people are the descendants of those who lived somewhere before another culture arrived and took over. There are several indigenous communities living in Norway, including the Sami, whose culture is closely connected with raising and herding reindeer. Work on the report started in 2018, and researchers interviewed more than 760 people. The report shows that indigenous people have been mistreated in Norway for hundreds of years. A public inquiry investigating how the Government handled the Covid-19 pandemic began on 6 June. What is the inquiry for? Sweet elderf lowers bloom

Elder trees, which are found all over the UK, can grow up to 15 metres high. Their bark is covered in wart-like marks called lenticels, which become rough folds as the tree grows. If you snap a young branch there is a sponge-like white tissue inside. Its small leaves, or leaflets, are arranged in pairs on a branch, with a single one at the end. The leaflets are oval, with a pointed tip and slightly ragged edges. By June, the elder’s sweet-smelling flowers appear. A mouthwatering work of art Using ingredients found in her kitchen, artist Kim Bainbridge has created a Dutch landscape made entirely from food. Apple unveils new headsets

Apple, the world’s largest technology company, has launched a new mixed-reality headset. With the device, called the Vision Pro, users can see and interact with computer-generated images set in the world around them. Apple’s boss, Tim Cook, described it as “the first computer you look through, not at”. The launch was announced at Apple’s annual conference on 5 June, which the company holds to reveal its latest technology updates. We encounter abbreviations every day in all kinds of places. When people talk about medical services in the UK – or United Kingdom – they’re likely to mention the “NHS”, rather than the National Health Service. The SATs (or Standard Assessment Tests) are referred to as “exams” – short for examinations. Some abbreviations are so common that we say them without thinking but others are less well known or only used by certain groups of people. Ghana’s great trailblazer

Fans of Ama Ata Aidoo’s books, plays and poems are celebrating her life after she died recently aged 81. Aidoo was known for creating strong African women characters in her stories and was a huge influence on other writers. She grew up in a small village in Ghana and began writing when she was 15. After studying at university, Aidoo became the first African woman to publish a play and won lots of awards for her work. She also spent time as education minister in Ghana and campaigned for free education. The zoo animals that like a visit

A study has found that some zoo animals are more fond of human company than others. It seems that elephants, in particular, like it when they have visitors. The research, by animal behaviour experts at Nottingham Trent University and Harper Adams University, in England, studied 250 species in zoos and how they responded to visitors. The team noticed that elephants showed fewer signs of boredom during the activities that involved the visitors, like public feedings. At these times, social activity among the elephants increased. I think the pongiest poo at Whipsnade Zoo comes from our otters. We have a family of Asian short-clawed otters, called Carol, Ernie, Peanut and Pistachio. They eat a range of quite strong-smelling foods, including whiffy fish and stinky crustaceans. Their poo is black and sticky like tar and smells like the contents of a fishmonger’s bin on a hot day – in other words, fishy and not very pleasant! Tasteless peas can help the planet

Scientists are making peas that don’t taste like peas. Researchers are trying to find an alternative for soya beans, which are used in lots of foods. In the UK, they are mostly used to feed farm animals but they also go into plant-based alternatives to meat. Demand for soya is growing fast across the world. The pea project is part of the UK Government’s plan to find ways to make more food without releasing more carbon dioxide (CO2), a gas that causes global warming (rising temperatures across the world that are causing climate change). Do you like our hip-hop cover? The most inspiring part of the street culture (apart from the brilliant dance and the bright graffiti) is that it comes from nothing. As you can see on page 12, hip-hop started in a poor area. People reused things to express their creativity. DJs messed around with old records and invented new sounds; blank walls became spaces for art; breakdancers would lay an old mat on the pavement to practise their moves.
