Judi Doyle, cofounder of Long Beach, Calif.’s Pride celebration, died February 8 in Yucaipa, Calif., at 78. She and three others established Long Beach Gay and Lesbian Pride, which runs the parade and other festivities, in 1983, and the city saw its first Pride parade the following year. Over the years, Doyle fought efforts by city officials to block the parade by requiring expensive insurance, and one year she even wore a bulletproof vest to the event because she’d received death threats. No shots were fired, however. Doyle had an early, brief marriage to a man and then came out as a lesbian.
