Songlines’ pick of the bunch…
Dele Sosimi (23 APRIL The Blues Kitchen, Manchester; 3 MAY Fox and Firkin, London) The Afrobeat pioneer, who cut his teeth playing rhythm keyboard and globe-trotting with Fela Kuti in the 80s, is playing with his 12-piece band at Fox and Firkin. They are aiming to transform the venue into, as far as reasonably possible, Fela’s famous Lagos club, Afrika Shrine. He will also be entertaining fans in Manchester, performing as part of the Cubafrobeat project, a night described as “a groove train travelling between Havana, Cuba and Lagos, Nigeria.” I’ve seen the former at Jazz Cafe, and the energy was unmatchable.
