It would be hard to overstate both the uniqueness and importance of Folkways Records, which celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. The American label was an early champion of dust bowl troubadour Woody Guthrie, recorded blues legend Leadbelly in his prime, and provided a foundation for the 1960s folk revival. Beyond its native borders, Folkways documented a wealth of audio wonders from every corner of the world, preserving extraordinary sounds from a plethora of cultures. There are few, if any, richer libraries of works, and its origins lie in Warsaw, Poland, with the birth of Folkways’ founder, Moses Asch, in 1905.
