Dr. Howard Venable is celebrated for his groundbreaking contributions to the field of ophthalmology. He was born on January 27, 1913, in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, to his mother, Agnes Hill, and father, William Venable. As a child, he moved to Detroit, Michigan, where he spent most of his life. Dr. Venable attended Wayne State University, earning a bachelor's degree in zoology in 1933 and a medical degree with honors in 1940.
Although Dr. Venable aspired to pursue a career in ophthalmology, he faced barriers, as neither internships nor residencies were accessible to Black individuals in Detroit at that time.
