The Mana Pools, literally meaning “four” pools in Shona, are situated northeast of Kariba. A common misconception is that the pools – named Chine, Green, Chisasiko and Long – are lake formations forming part of the Zambezi. While they are, in fact, the remnants of oxbow lakes, they actually lie inland of the mighty Zambezi.
In the dry season, when most waterholes in the region vanish, vast herds of game head for the Pools. These, save for one, remain filled year-round. Predators such as lion, spotted hyena, leopard, African painted dog and cheetah make the most of the large concentration of prey, and it’s seldom that one leaves the park without having seen any. The dry season lasts from June to October, more or less.
