IN 1970, Ralph Steadman was an obscure British cartoonist when the underground magazine Scanlan’s Monthly gave him an assignment: Accompany Hunter S. Thompson at the Kentucky Derby. Thompson’s chronicle of that “decadent and depraved” day became an early classic of gonzo journalism, and Steadman’s illustrations – gnomish, cigar-chomping spectators watching misshapen horses – perfectly mirrored Thompson’s visceral language.
