1932 Ford 90th Anniversary 1932 - 2022 Hot Rodders worldwide will be celebrating the 90th Anniversary of the 1932 Ford, and many events across the country will be promoting this milestone. The first Optima Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) batteries were first produced in 1972 and are still the leader, forty-plus years later. Clarios (formerly Johnson Controls) is dedicated to only manufacturing Optima batteries in their state-of-the-art plant in Monterrey, Mexico. The first battery was produced there on July 6, 2007 They only use the highest-grade materials, and their advanced robotics are programmed for precision. Joe Albietz had a 1930 Ford sedan when he was a mere 13 years old. When he turned 14, he put a small-block Chevy in it. Okay, you can pretty much figure out where this is going. During the next 58 years, Joe would own and/or build several modified vehicles. Among them is a ’57 Corvette, ’30 Model A coupe, ’34 Ford Tudor, ’37 Ford Tudor, ’40 Ford coupe, ’40 Ford pickup, ’49 Ford coupe, ’32 Ford roadster, ’30 Ford pickup, and others too numerous to mention. Nostalgia Street Rods hosted their Annual Goldstrom’s Classic Car Show on Saturday, November 6th, at their facility, located just off the southern end of the famed Las Vegas Strip. Sheri Goldstrom, her chief assistant Dominique Johnson, and a host of volunteers worked feverishly in the planning and execution of the charity car show to benefit the Speedway Children’s Charities Las Vegas whose vision is that every child has the same opportunities no matter what obstacle they are facing. The show is open to all classic cars, hot rods, street rods, customs, muscle cars, trucks, and motorcycles, and the entrants and spectators are welcome to tour the Nostalgia Street Rods Museum at no charge. Founded in 1972 by ten local street rod enthusiasts, this small roadster club began hosting a show in a city park, naturally in San Luis Obispo. Fifty years later, the club is still going strong, with 4 of the founders still active in the club! As with so many small clubs, the annual show grew from a few local friends displaying their cars to 300 entries over the years; the club included a catered dinner and dancing one night, renting out local venues for the night, which became hard to accommodate upwards of 600 people. So the club, which had included a scenic drive from time to time after the shows, began to change to a cruising event in 2005. Within a few years, the switch was done with the…

The Museum of American Speed held its inaugural Gallery of Automotive Art Grand Opening Event on September 25th and 26th in Lincoln, Nebraska. For the first time, special guests were invited to see some of the top Hot Rod artists and artwork from around the country. Special guests included Tom Fritz, Guy Shively, Bob Seabeck, Darrell Mayabb, Al Bergler, Chuck Miller, and many more. This extraordinary collection of art encompasses works from over 50 American automotive artists. In addition, the gallery includes works from Tom Fritz, select sculptures of Stanley Wanlass, Darrell Mayabb’s studio space installation, and much more. On Friday night, guests heard from CEO Clay Smith, Museum Curator Tim Matthews, and automotive pioneer Bob Larivee during a welcoming ceremony. Every hot rod is unique; some follow a tried-and-true style while others aim for the stars. Dale Deburger of Seymour, Indiana, enjoyed going to car shows and looking at pictures of “rat rods.” Still, the rough and tumbled finish wasn’t his style, and he thought it would be cool to finish one to the tune of a “Retro Rod,” and he did along with builder Tom Culbertson. He decided that the Model A sedan would give him a perfect look because of the length of the body, especially when it sits right on the ground. However, he knew it would take building a custom chassis versus adapting an “A” or ‘32 Ford frame rails to achieve the look. So, to get the correct stance, he had Wheelsmith build custom 18…

This was our first trip to the Goodguys Colorado show, and it was a hit in our books. The event venue is The Ranch Events Complex, located in Loveland, about 50 miles north of Denver. The late summer event took place from September 10-12, and the weather couldn’t have been any better. Besides the usual car show, other activities included an automotive swap meet, autocross, dragster exhibition, auction, a burnout competition, and live entertainment. The venue provides plenty of grass and trees to offer a park-like feel to the show. Another highlight of the area is the quaint downtown entertainment districts in both Loveland and nearby Fort Collins. There are also plenty of restaurants and hotels within proximity of the show. Darrell Zipp is one of those hot rodders with the talent, knowledge, and skills to build a complete hot rod by himself. Originally from Minnesota, Darrell joined the U.S. Army in 1965. Upon his return to civilian life, he headed directly to the warm climate of Southern California. He went to the Art Center College of Design and produced freelance artwork in his free time. Eventually, he was hired by Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, who was publishing a magazine titled “Chopper” at the time. Roth had many contacts and got him an interview with Revell Inc., the model car manufacturer. While working at Revell as the head of research and development, he was still tinkering with “full-size” cars. So he and friend Jim Skogs decided to begin producing the first…

Eddie Gettler is no stranger to classic autos, as this 1955 Chevy would be his fourth truck. Ever since he was young, there were always Tonka and Matchboxes around that as he got older developed into an auto enthusiast to the point of even working on them. This would be a lifelong passion with him starting to wrench on his mother’s ’66 Buick Skylark to keep it running as a necessity. As a result, she even let him install Cragar wheels and dual exhaust. Over time he picked up a 1962 Fleetside, ’58 Stepside, and a ’58 Apache. What is the most famous custom car of all time? The subject is open to debate, but one of the most likely candidates is the Sea Foam ’51 Mercury owned by Bob Hirohata and built by Southern California’s Barris Kustom in ’52. Brothers Sam and George Barris already had left their mark on the custom scene, thanks to other notable vehicles by then. They included the highly revered maroon ’40 Mercury, which they built for client Nick Matranga in 1949-50. Matranga’s chopped top coupe has been an inspiration to countless customizers since, with several enthusiasts even creating clones. Part of the car’s appeal lies in its graceful lines enhanced by a novel side-window design featuring a beautiful radius. Incidentally, the brothers used the same detail on the aforementioned Hirohata ’51…

This south/central New Mexico rod run was first held in 1985 and was billed as the Tri-City Rod Run (El Paso, Las Cruces, and Alamogordo) to Cloudcroft, New Mexico. It remained that way until 1987, and in 1988 it became the Tri-City Rod Run to Ruidoso. In 1989 the name changed to the Run to Ruidoso and was held at Municipal Park in downtown Ruidoso, but it eventually outgrew the venue. From 2000-2017 the show moved to Ruidoso Downs racetrack and casino and became the Run to Ruidoso Downs. The show remained there until 2016. In 2017 the show moved to its current location at the Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort and casino and was renamed Run to the Inn of the Mountain Gods. The 2020 event was postponed…

Pinkee’s Rod Shop is located about a mile from The Ranch Complex and hosted the Friday night gathering at their facility, which includes the Mash Lab Brewing company and sports bar. The shop was open for participants to view the many projects in progress. Food and drinks were also available.…

Gilding is the correct name for what most folks know as Gold Leaf. The process is adhering an actual thin layer of metal onto the surface, then clearing it for protection.
