With the Third Annual Spokane Speed and Custom Show now in the history books word is getting out as to just how good this show is becoming and that it’s definitely here to stay. The show is held at the Spokane Fairgrounds and attracted two hundred cars from Southern California, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Alberta, British Columbia Canada, and of course, the state of Washington. The show is a family orientated event intent on making sure participants and attendees are made to feel welcome and enjoy themselves. This old Ford coupe has quite a history, originally from western New York State where I grew up. It was first hot rodded in the early ‘50s and raced at local tracks. The five-window coupe was totally redone in the 80s, and I even talked with the man who did it. He told me the car was blue but came with no doors. While a senior in high school I ran across a ’32 coupe that could have been this same car. This Deuce spent several years in Ohio and then Arizona where I spotted it at the 2006 Goodguys Show Scottsdale with a “for sale” sign on the windshield. Nineteen years ago, Craig Lawson of Gilbert, Arizona decided he wanted to build a street rod, and his affection with the Model A “telephone booth” pickups made it an easy choice. In 2000 he purchased the 1928 Ford body, bed, grille shell, and a stock Model A dash from a friend in North Scottsdale. The eight-year project would begin with the hunt for parts since Craig wanted to use as many original pieces to go with the original body. He managed to hunt down a full set of NOS fenders and only had to buy aftermarket running boards, splash aprons, and the hood. KrazyPaint Charity Panel Jam There’s a great tradition in our Hot Rod world that we just can’t hear enough about. The Charity Panel Jam (CPJ) is where pinstripers and other automotive artists get together, paint up lots of Kool Hot Rod art and sell it to raise money for kids. Krazy Paint is a CPJ which is part of the largest indoor custom car show in the world, and both are getting quite a bit of attention. The Summit Racing Equipment I-X Piston Powered Auto-Rama is held in Cleveland, Ohio every March. With attendance over 55,000, folks are literally coming from all over the world to see over one million square feet covered with over 1500 vehicles. Don Lindfors, the owner/builder of this 1932 Ford roadster pickup, has built many cars in his time, including off-road racers to hot rods, show cars to muscle cars. He’s done a lot, but there was one always in the back of his mind which just didn’t seem to materialize. As we talked about this build, it turned out that he had passed on a rusty ‘32 RPU project back in 1973, but had mentally built it many times. Over the years Don built a couple of award-winning Model A RPU’s, one which was featured in issue #34 of Rodding USA, but at 6’1” he was never very comfortable in them and resigned himself to the fact that he would probably never build that elusive ‘32. The Kern County Fairgrounds in Bakersfield, California played host to the 43rd National Street Rod Association Western Street Rod Nationals on April 26-28, 2019. An impressive showing of hot rods, street rods, customs and street machines from all around the southwest gave spectators a great mix of cars and trucks to view. Bakersfield is home to over 800,000 residents and some of the coolest rides in the U.S. In fact, this show was attended by more local cars than any which I have been to in recent years. Bakersfield has excellent year-round weather makes it an ideal location for custom car lovers plus it’s a 100-mile drive to the greater Los Angeles area and a 250-mile drive to the San Francisco Bay area and more great car events. When you think about it, tools have been in use in one form or another since the beginning. I remember seeing a program about primates using a stick to catch ants. By pushing the stick down into the ant hole, the ants would bite the stick, and when the stick was removed from the hole, the primate had a meal. Ingenious really. Man has used basic tools since his beginning. Rocks became hammers, a wooden stick became a weapon. As human’s knowledge evolved, so did his tools. He learned to mine minerals, making tools to accomplish this and he used the minerals to make stronger better tools to do more. After an incredible 18 year run with the Model T Ford, it was time to usher in a new era of vehicles and the first Model A rolled off the assembly line on October 20, 1927. Over its 4-year run, the Ford Motor Company would produce 4,325,725 domestically and a totat of 4,858,644 worldwide. Don and his father Don Senior bought the 1930 Ford roadster pickup from a local sandblaster’s business in El Monte, California in 1961 as a father-son project. This was when Burr King, the family business was located in California. They worked on it in their spare time and painted it in about 1963. Don drove it to high school in Whittier, CA and raced it once at Lion’s Drag Strip in 1969. Don also drove it to Model A meets in SoCal and for pleasure throughout the ‘70s-’80s and ‘90s. In 1995 they moved the manufacturing facility to Missouri. Southern California friends Karpo Murkijanian and Brian Bauer were having lunch in 2017 discussing hot rods and came to the realization that 2018 – 2021 would be the 90th anniversary of the Ford Model A. They discussed the fact that rodders relish significant anniversaries of the ’32, ’34 and ’40 Fords but couldn’t recall much being done for Model As. They decided they needed to come up with an idea on how to commemorate this milestone considering how many noteworthy and historic Model A hot rods have been built.
