In his early days, Jeff played Slingerland, Ludwig, Camco and Gretsch, sometimes preferring large diameter (24" and 26") bass drums. He had many snare drums, including Ludwig Black Beauties and Slingerland Radio Kings, and he borrowed cymbals from his dad, jazz drummer Joe. He was always experimenting with sound and drums, and would use a different setup and tuning for whatever the gig or session required.
From 1982, Jeff prominently endorsed Pearl. With his drum tech Paul Jamieson, he designed the first modern drum rack, which Pearl subsequently and successfully marketed as the DR-1.
Jeff played maple shell Pearl kits (before the advent of the Masters and Reference Series) with a 22" kick and 10", 12", 13", 14" and 16" toms in standard depths. He used Remo Ambassadors on top…
