The first day of second grade in 1952 was the scariest of my entire life. We had just moved to South Carolina for my dad’s job and were living in a Spartan Mansion trailer instead of a house. I knew no one, not even my teacher. When I walked into the classroom, a bit late, everything was in order. Mrs. Gattis had stacked each desk with books, our names on top. My family’s symphony of life started before I was born. When my dad, Edward Kulesza, was in high school, he loved to listen to his neighbor, a professional saxophone player, practicing his music. Dad was so mesmerized by it that he decided to try to play sax in his school band. Unfortunately, the only horn available was a trombone. Dad gave it his best, but he had to quit at 16 when he left school to get a job to help support his family. Flash forward a few decades to when I played alto saxophone at Royal Oak Dondero High School at the urging of—you guessed it—my dad. COLD DESSERT CAKES date to pre-Colonial days, but recipes for no-bake cakes kept in the icebox started appearing during World War I. Early versions resembled trifles, with sponge cake or ladyfingers set in molds and filled with custard and fruit. In 1932, Nabisco published a recipe that used cookies, which soon grew to be the dominant type. In the boom years after World War II, as houses were being equipped with sleek appliances like those shown in Vintage Ads on page 50, the no-bake dessert now known as refrigerator cake became a staple. As a teen, I spent my free time after school doing homework and baby-sitting my siblings. When I could get a real job, at 15, I found one at a department store. But three years later, when I returned home from college for the summer, that job was gone, and I resorted to factory work—at $5 an hour, it was quite lucrative. The factory made plastic containers for doughnuts, cookies and other baked goods. We stood in front of 10-foot-tall machines that were fed sheets of plastic. Overhead forms were heated and pressed down on the plastic. Presto! Six to eight ready-molded containers blossomed and lurched toward workers who quickly stacked and packed them into boxes. On a personal mission to feel closer to God, struggling musician Artie Glenn visited an empty church near his Tennessee home. Mothers are complicated creatures. I found that out at 12 in 1950 when I had my first opportunity to play organized baseball. Our church, Caldwell Memorial Presbyterian, had decided to field a youth baseball team. We played other teams in the Charlotte, North Carolina, area. The Cadet Nurse Corps, authorized by the Bolton Act of 1943, was federally funded within the U.S. Public Health Service to recruit nursing students and prevent a shortage during World War II. THE TRIP TOOK MOST OF THE DAY ON A TWO-LANE HIGHWAY. When I was 5, my grandparents Lawrence and Esther Mackus took me on a road trip to see the Mackinac Bridge, known as The Mighty Mac, the longest suspension bridge in the Western Hemisphere. It opened to traffic on Nov. 1, 1957, connecting Michigan’s upper and lower peninsulas and separating Lake Michigan from Lake Huron. We set off in the spring of 1958 from Grandville, Michigan, near Grand Rapids. TWO GENERATIONS lived in our big three-story farmhouse, and it was crammed full of used furniture and things my father had bought at auctions.
