In railway terms, Catesby Tunnel on the old Great Central Railway is a monster. Built to the Berne gauge, it’s nearly two miles long and dead straight. It was originally planned as a cutting, but the local landowner (one Henry Attenborough) didn’t want an unsightly railway in his back garden, so a tunnel was built instead.
Catesby Tunnel, close to Charwelton in Northamptonshire, is 2,997 yards long (1.7 miles), 27 feet wide, and 25 feet tall. Its construction required 30 million bricks, and for a large tunnel it surprisingly took only three years to build.
