Healey Mills Yard, near Wakefield, has been made available for training purposes by DB Cargo UK, which no longer uses the facility.
The decision follows a recent three-day, multi-agency exercise involving a simulated train derailment. Working with West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, Yorkshire Ambulance, Network Rail, Wakefield Council and the British Transport Police, DB created a scenario where a carriage had turned over.
DB used stored Mk 2s and withdrawn parcel vans for the ‘crash’, which was also attended by West Yorkshire Police, the Office of Rail and Road (ORR), the Department for Transport and the Rail Accident Investigation Branch.
Volunteers from St John’s Ambulance acted as trapped, injured and missing passengers, while dummies were used to replicate fatalities and passengers stuck under the stock.
