FAMILY MAN Writer Jeff Pope penned both Cilla and Stan & Ollie but looks a little closer to home for his latest biopic, with a film script about his former colleague at ITV, Caroline Aherne, the late co-creator and star of The Royle Family. The project is currently titled Half the World Away, after the Oasis song used as the sitcom’s theme tune, and Pope says he wants to pay tribute to a “genius” rule-breaker’s “sad, funny and emotional” story. THRILLER The Lost Bus ★★★ 15 Apple TV+ Available 3 October Matthew McConaughey gives a convincing, charismatic performance as the unlikely hero at the centre of this true-story thriller. He plays Kevin, a school bus driver who, during the 2018 Camp Fire — which would become California’s most destructive wildfire of all time — ferried 22 children to safety amid the raging blaze. Director Paul Greengrass (United 93, Captain Phillips) crafts a focused, if often hokey, tale of personal redemption that McConaughey rises to exquisitely, while America Ferrera lends wholehearted support as the kids’ dedicated teacher. Though in many ways it’s a more human take on the disaster-movie genre, Greengrass delivers on the mayhem, too. YOUTUBE ISN’T simply a rabbit hole. It’s more accurate to describe it as a warren, a maze of interconnected chambers. One of the greatest of these is the YouTube page of the BBC Archive, a tunnel down which it’s possible to burrow quite contentedly for a couple of hours, at the end of which you will return with pockets full of soil and your sense of wonder magically enhanced. It’s hard to decide which is more amazing: John Noakes’s ascent of Nelson’s Column from 1977 or the presence of Anne Frank’s father as a guest on Blue Peter the year before. AUTUMN INTO EARLY winter is when I do most of my planting. Trees, hardy shrubs, perennials and spring bulbs can all go in – and if you’re planting them all (in a new bed, say) that’s the order in which to put them in, too, from largest to smallest with bulbs going in last. Planting in autumn makes a huge difference. It’s when plants get their roots down, so next spring they’ll push through with vigour and will be happier in the long term. This year was so dry early on that plants that went in late struggled and required lots of watering – a lesson to be learnt.
