The majority of Irish spring malting barley is grown in the south east of the country on free-draining soils that warm up quickly in the spring for the early drilling that is so vital when trying to achieve a low protein malting crop. However, their free-draining characteristics can also be a disadvantage, as leaching can be a common issue. This is why cover/catch crops have become extremely important for many Irish tillage farmers across the main malting barley growing regions, because they provide soil protection during the winter months and help to prevent leaching of valuable soil nutrients. Wanting to boost his spraying capacity Johannes Eder made his own front tank to go with his Lemken Sirius 10/1600 mounted sprayer. Starting point for the project was a 600-litre Hardi tank. To this he welded a new channel section frame for the lower links and also repositioned the top link coupling so the sprayer could be kept close to the tractor. On the left-hand side, perforated sheeting was used to create a storage area, while a locker box was added to the right. Removable castor wheels make it easy to manoeuvre the sprayer into storage when not in use. A full-width, full-length base plate under the sprayer minimises any damage to the crop. With trailed sprayer capacity commonly topping 6,000-litres, size is no longer an issue when making the decision between self-propelled and trailed machines. But there is still plenty to take into account, manufacturers suggest. John Deere’s product sales specialist, Mark James suggests that there is a certain amount of movement from self-propelled sprayers to trailed machines and vice versa. “It really depends on farm organisation and if they can justify an extra tractor. In the UK there is a ‘cultural ambition’ to have a self-propelled machine, and trailed sprayers are certainly more popular in France and Germany.” Reduced clearance is cited as a downside of trailed machines, but Mr James says that it is rarely an issue with UK cropping. “Weight distribution is little different except on the largest machines and…

Usually when it comes to the profi Practical Tests, the supplied machines are brimming with options, such as the almost fully loaded Amazone trailed sprayer we looked at last month. So, when it came to test the Claas Liner 3600 we chose to keep things simple and went with the bog-standard, entry-level version of the firm’s smaller four-rotor rake. This 9.90m to 12.50 machine is towed from the lower links. These are in the correct position when the rake is sitting slightly forward. Disconnected oil hoses are stored in on-board brackets, and the electric plugs are placed on the frame. We liked the guide bar that safely routes the pipes and wires to the tractor. Fuel consumption must be one of the major plus points for using a truck to shift loads on the road compared to a tractor and trailer combination. Higher legal payloads and faster speeds are also big attractions. Yet there are also disadvantages such as small tyres, increased ground pressure and not enough traction when things start to get greasy. So, to counter some of the negatives, MAN and Fliegl have come up with the pictured rig, which should go some way to boosting infield performance. Located in south east Germany, Manfred Haberl operates a Horsch 7GS trailed sprayer, complete with 33m wide boom with double nozzle bodies on a 25cm spacing. Tug of choice is a Fendt Vario 720 Profi Plus equipped with ISObus and Reichhardt RTK steering. Previously, the beet was sprayed with a 12-row band sprayer, while mechanical weeding was carried out with a 12-row hoe. As both of these operations were very time-consuming, Mr Haberl switched to area spraying while still hoeing certain parts of the beet crop. Kverneland is constantly adapting the Optima range of precision drills, updating the frames and expanding the selection of seeder units. For instance, back in 2015 it introduced the TF Profi II frame, complete with four-wheel running gear, which we used with Optima HD seeder units that could work at speeds of up to 12km/hr, in the 5/2016 issue. With the need for more speed, Kverneland then unveiled its faster pace SX seeder units at Agritechnica 2017. Let us start with that simple question. Is the XUV 865R the most comfortable Gator ever produced by John Deere? In a nutshell, yes, and here is why. For a start, the diesel engine’s noise and vibration is really well masked from the operator by the ‘automotive’ style cab. Although a ‘proper’ cab is offered on the less expensive XUV 865M, with the same wind down door windows and opening front screen as fitted to its more expensive sibling, the latter has upgrades such as a thick roof lining, covered ‘A’ pillars and soft fabric covered seats. Time is often the scarcest resource for Dutch dairy farmer and potato grower Erik Hans, with a lot of the main machinery operations kept in house. Most of the equipment is sourced second-hand and, to maximise output, he looks to do as many operations in a single pass as possible. For example, rather than using a plough for primary cultivations, the farm relies on a spading machine or deep subsoiler/cultivator combination. Both of these are 3.0m wide and are used in combination with a semi-mounted drill. Loosening, mixing, sowing and consolidating in one run, the cultivator combination is used for sowing cover crops after cereals or potatoes. The month of May in the state of Indiana, the sun is shining, and it is a balmy 28°C. When we pulled into the Kohlhagen farm in Rensselaer, 60km south of Lake Michigan, we passed through huge puddles, signs of recent rain. Rich Kohlhagen, the senior in the business greets us. Normally the maize corn and soybean drilling is completed by mid-May, but at the moment the Kohlhagens have drilled just half of their 4,000 acres (1,619ha).
