“I rarely head to the coast without my tripod. First and foremost, I want stability. I’m often using slow shutter speeds exceeding 1/2sec, so my camera needs to be stable. Also, it is much easier to align graduated filters precisely with the camera fixed in position. SCUDDING CLOUDS ARE USUALLY captured as a result of using an ND filter to take a long exposure. Having the camera’s shutter open for several seconds, or even minutes, allows you to blur any moving parts of your image, including the clouds. It’s a striking effect, but if you didn’t have your filters with you when out on a shoot you can recreate this in Photoshop. However, it’s still vitally important to ensure that you’ve got a sharp scene, as otherwise your image won’t have as much of an impact as you’d like. If you want to achieve the sort of milky seas and scudding clouds found in many pro coastal shots you will need to take very long exposures. Your choices then are to shoot before dawn or after dusk, or to make use of neutral density filters. These filters come in stop ratings, which give the exposure compensation you will be able to make when they are placed in front of your lens. A 10-stop filter will turn a ‘normal’ exposure of 1/60sec into a 16-second exposure. Shutter speeds of several minutes can be achieved by stacking multiple filters on the lens. 1 Compose your shot Set up your shot without the filter in place and take a regular meter reading of the scene. The coast abounds in patterns, textures and abstractions and it often pays to turn your camera away from the big skies and rolling breakers to concentrate on some of the small details that are unique to this sort of landscape. Natural objects like rocks, shells and driftwood make wonderful studies. COLOUR BALANCE Colour Balance is a much-used tool. It’s responsible for values of colour in a particular image, and can be used to subtly grade you work, or even create a dramatic mood by cooling down the scene, or using it to mimic soft warm summer light. HSL HSL stands for Hue, Saturation and Luminance. It allows you to choose specific colour channels, and alter the value of each hue, meaning you can change all of your original colours. You can also control the saturation and brightness. SPLIT TONING Split Toning assigns different colour values to the highlights and shadows. You can then choose a bias to decide which colour dominates. This simple technique can create a wild effect, or just introduce complementary colours into your work, which really draws…

WHENEVER we’re on a citybreak or holiday to an interesting location, we shoot, and shoot and shoot. But only a handful of those images are likely to see the light of day. What if they could still be useful, though? What if they could add flare to the shots you like and do it in a way that’s totally unique and true to the location? As you paint, depending on the settings you’ve dialled in using the Tool Options, the Mixer Brush will either be picking up paint from the canvas or not. Depending on the Brush Cleaning setting, this mixing of paint will continue for just one stroke or for many. So for example here we are painting blue across an existing red brush stroke. The Mixer Brush is set to Moist, Light Mix, so as we paint it’s picking up white from the background, then red. With the option to clean the brush on each stroke enabled, the same looking stroke is made each time. ABOUT 10 YEARS AGO, American wedding photographer Ryan Brenizer popularised a fresh take on the humble panorama – known as the ‘bokeh panorama’. Now coined the Brenizer Method, it’s a great way to use Photoshop’s ability to merge images and create an ultra-shallow depth-of-field, just like you’d get from using a large-format film camera. If you’ve ever shot with a 50mm f/1.8, you’ll know all too well how easy it is to turn the background into a pleasing blur, due to the super wide f/1.8 maximum aperture. Technique 1 Join stars to make text Joining up stars to create constellations or words is a fun technique that’ll expand your knowledge of Photoshop CC’s Pen Tool. Grab the Pen Tool from the Toolbox and in the Tool Options set the Tool Mode to Shape. A photograph is the unique medium in which you can capture a fraction of a second and freeze it in time forever. However, just because you’re able to crank up your shutter speed to 1/1000sec, that doesn’t necessarily mean that this is the best way to capture a high-speed situation. Unfortunately, there’s not a generic shutter speed that will guarantee perfect results. Instead, you’ll need to rely on trial and error to get the right settings. However, there are a few factors that can help you get it right. Firstly, the faster your subject is travelling, the faster your shutter speed can be. We found that 1/30sec was perfect for a car, but a cyclist may require a slower shutter speed and a train may require a faster one. You’ll also need to keep in mind how far away you are from the subject. The closer you are, the faster your shutter speed can be. “Exposure is the very heartbeat of photography and your choice of aperture and shutter speed will greatly influence the look and feel of the images you take. Personally, I rely on my camera’s multipoint Matrix metering and mostly shoot in aperture-priority mode. I rely heavily on my camera’s Live View histogram. I shoot many of my coastal landscapes during the golden hours, around sunrise and sunset. At these times of day, the sky is often bright and the level of contrast within the scene is typically quite high. This can cause problems, exceeding the camera’s dynamic range. Getting a great monochrome image isn’t a simple matter of desaturating a colour shot in post-editing. While there will always be a few ‘happy accidents’, where a colour shot just happens to work really well in mono, you should always know whether or not you plan to present an image in black & white before you shoot it. Monochrome photos require some unique characteristics to work really well. They need to be very graphic, and they will have some particular contrast requirements. With the colour removed from the scene, the delineation between areas of different contrast becomes key to the compositional power of the shot. CHOOSE A WIDE APERTURE The technique is all about producing unbelievably wide apertures, and the effect is bolstered even more by choosing the widest aperture you have available. The wider your aperture, the more the effect can be amplified. OVERLAP EVERY SHOT BY 30% Just like a panorama, make sure that every shot overlaps by 30%. This will make it easier for Photoshop to merge the images together, without having to worry about ending up with too many missing spots and gaps.
