At the beginning of the year, I traveled to Florida to cover the George H. Morris Horsemastership Training Session and to attend some photo shoots for upcoming training stories, including Selena O’ Hanlon’s on cross-country banks (page 38). Originally from Tampa, Florida, Keri Kampsen rode with Christina Schlusemeyer and Bob Braswell at Quiet Hill Farm as a Junior. She won multiple ribbons in the major equitation finals, including a first in the 1997 ASPCA Maclay Final, second in the 1998 North American Equitation Championships, fourth in the 1998 AHSA Medal Final and sixth in the WIHS Equitation Classic. Gastric ulcers are a common result of chronic stress and cause a large amount of anxiety for owners. Unfortunately, ulcers often go undiagnosed until the effects become serious. Cortisol, a hormone released by the adrenal glands during stress, reduces the production of the hormone prostaglandin, which then lowers the pH (increases the acidity) of the stomach. In turn, the stomach’s protective mucous lining is less effective and susceptible to damage. The development of lesions (open sores or wounds) on the stomach lining may cause abdominal pain, reduced appetite, colic and poor body condition. Madden Wins World Cup In breathtaking fashion, Beezie Madden and Breitling LS swept the competition to win the Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping Final, April 16, in Paris. Many signs of stress are similar to signs of an emergency situation, including colic-like symptoms, diarrhea or going off his feed. How do you know what is normal stress and what warrants a call to your veterinarian? According to Ted Wright, DVM, of Cedar Ridge Animal Hospital & Equine Services, a horse with diarrhea should always have his body temperature taken. A combination of runny manure and a fever (101°F or higher for an adult equine) could indicate a serious problem. Q How do I hold a dressage whip without risking hitting my horse accidentally, but also without it interfering with how I hold the rein in that hand? Does it matter what hand I carry it in? I’m not very good at switching it from one hand to another, so I would rather just keep it in one hand, especially during a test at a show. I’m reaching out to your magazine in response to the February 2018 article featuring Ron Danta (“There’s a Real World Out There”). I applaud the work that Danny and Ron’s Rescue does for unwanted animals and have nothing but the utmost respect for Ron as a horseman. I do, however, have concerns about his statement that many show horses who are unsound get donated to schools for a big tax write-off and then ultimately the schools send them to kill pens. A statement like that paints all schools with a very negative brush and can make it very hard for us to secure quality donations or students.
