A RESERVOIR Hills woman will have to see out a 10-year jail term for her R2.7 million fraud and theft conviction, after the Durban High Court dismissed her appeal against the sentence. Sharitha Hariram, 57, was sentenced in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on six counts of fraud amounting to R1 981 762 and three theft charges amounting to R1 195 706 in September 2020. ON October 4, 1860, 163 years ago, a ship called the Belvedere disembarked from the port city of Calcutta (now Kolkata), carrying 342 labourers destined for the port city of Natal (now KwaZulu-Natal). The Belvedere warrants a deeper gaze in highlighting human commodification, abuse and violence in the machinations that administered the colonial system of indenture. Records show that 29 of the 342 passengers perished in the Indian Ocean before the ship reached South Africa on November 26, 1860. Further misery followed when the passengers arrived in Natal with 10 dying even before being assigned to a plantation. A “FLAWED billing system” and estimated readings are being blamed for the high utility bills slapped on eThekwini residents. Ward councillors said they were inundated with complaints and queries about the light-and-water bills, with some claiming to be dealing with up to 200 complaints from irate residents a month. November 26 marks the 163rd anniversary of the second allotment of indentured workers arriving to their African homes aboard the SS Belvedere. The Belvedere left Calcutta on October 4, 1860, carrying 342 passengers to the port city of Natal. On the journey, 29 souls perished because of the atrocious conditions on the ship. Readers are invited to gather at the 1860 Heritage Centre in Derby Street, Greyville, to ring the Indentured Worker Bell in tribute to those indentured workers who lost their lives on the journey. A PHOENIX mother has claimed that a local drug dealer had put a “hit” on her only child after he was shot dead execution-style at the weekend. This monument was supposed to be a form of a physical historical record of an extremely important chapter in the lives of the people of Indian origin. Why has the theme “unity in diversity” been incorporated into the design? This is a historical event of a people. If one lives “on the ground” in South Africa, it is clear that no one cares about our contribution to national cohesion! Yet, Indians do a lot in this area. SRI Lanka are free to compete internationally but next year's Under-19 Cricket World Cup will now be hosted by South Africa, as the International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed the terms of suspension of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Tuesday.
