Hue and Saturation 01 Pick a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer. We will use this to put some colour on the sunrays, but not anywhere else. It gives a more realistic feel, and if you want to go dreamy in your landscape pictures, this is a great way to do it! Colourise the image 02 In the Hue/Saturation properties window, check Colorize. Your image will get colour all over it. Sometimes the colour of the sun and the sun cast on the land is different, for instance, snow/sea gives a bluish cast. Isolate the colour 03 We only want the Hue/Saturation layer to affect the sunrays layer. Correct your composition further with these simple features Cookie Cutter 01 This crop option is barely a crop option at all, despite being situated in the Crop Tool panel. All it does is mask the background of your photo with a shape of your choice, but it can be useful for collages or framing your images. Crop 02 The Crop Tool is a rudimentary feature but that’s not to say it isn’t an essential option. Choose from the Crop Suggestions or set a specific width and height either in the bottom panel or by resizing the Crop handles. Gradient Map 01 Perhaps the easiest way to add contrast to an image, a Gradient Map adjustment can add black and white to whichever parts of your image you wish, simply by sliding the colours along the stoppers. Set the adjustment to Soft Light or Overlay to apply the effect. Levels 02 One of the most obvious ways to change the contrast is to tweak the stoppers on the Levels adjustment to improve the light and dark in the image. By using the Channel drop-down menu, you can use the same stoppers to alter the red, green and blue channels. Take note of gradient 01 When we created the line pattern in Illustrator in step 18, the blended lines will create a blend gradient. Use the solid side to depict darker shadows onto your objects. Transform line pattern 02 Scale it down accordingly, in this case 75%. The rotation will affect how the gradient will appear. Rotate Angle to -150 degrees so that the lines are on top, and solid on bottom. Colourise the line pattern 03 Use the Color Overlay to colourise the line pattern. Restrain the colours by using Web Colors only. We have chosen a dark greenish-blue for the shadows of the coral. Over the last few weeks, we’ve been running an exciting competition in collaboration with ODEON, Warner Bros UK and Talenthouse, in order to find the best fan-designed Tomb Raider film poster, to celebrate the release of the new Tomb Raider film on 16 March. We’re absolutely thrilled with the response, as hundreds of high-quality entries were submitted to the competition, so it’s obvious that Tomb Raider has really gotten designers’ creative juices flowing this last month or so. Select a reflection 01 Reopen the guitar image and use the Elliptical Marquee Tool to draw a circle just around one of the small reflections on the metal frets under the first string. Transfer to main image 02 Press Cmd/Ctrl+C and head back to the main composition. Press Cmd/Ctrl+V to paste the reflection. Move it to sit on the metal fret. Press J to duplicate for the other frets. Blend and resize 03 Use a soft Eraser to blend the reflections onto the frets. The larger the brush is, the softer blend you can achieve. Use Free Transform (Cmd/ Ctrl+T) to resize each layer to fit. Duplicate strips 01 Grab a hard brush with 1% Spacing and create a horizontal strip; duplicate this down your document by Alt/ Opt-dragging it. Mask out some strips 02 Group the strips and then hit Mask. Cmd/Ctrl-click one of strip’s layer previews, and then move it so it looks like it does in the screenshot. Now mask it out. Vary the length 03 Continue to mask out every other strip, but make sure you do so at different lengths. Likewise, vary the lengths of the strips that point outwards. Bush size 01 In order to adjust the brush size of your Adjustment Brush, simply press the keyboard’s left and right bracket keys. This will enlarge or reduce your brush accordingly.
