According to man's spiritual state in the Gross Material World as well as in the Ethereal World, the spiritual man, the real ‘ego’, must either move upwards or remain chained to the World of Matter. The serious longing for Truth and Light will, by virtue of the change it works in him, make each person spiritually purer and thus more luminous, so that this condition must naturally detach him more and more from dense matter, and drive him upwards in proportion to his purity and lightness. However, he who believes only in matter keeps himself bound to matter by his conviction, remaining chained to it, and thus cannot be driven upwards. Through a decision personally desired by each individual, a separation therefore takes place between those striving towards the Light…

We are born, we live for a time, then we die. We can plan our lives in accordance with this self-evident truth, or we can suppress any thought of it and live our lives as if death did not exist. By so doing, however, we are just deluding ourselves because birth and death are the two inseparable poles of earthly life. There is no pulling them apart. No one needs to remind us that we will die someday and that our loved ones will also die, either before or after us. In any case, such a reminder, if given, would be most unwelcome to many people. The paradox, though, is that we go through life behaving as if we will never die and can live indefinitely, presuming to be sailing…

The sun rose in brilliant majesty above the mountains and shone into a peaceful, narrow valley, awaking to joyful living the creatures who were made to delight in the sunshine of their life. The blackbird warbled its morning song from the edge of the sun-gilded forest; the monotonous love song of the longing quail sounded among sparkling blossoms in dew-laden grass glistening in the sunrise, and amorous crows danced their nuptial round above dark pines or cawed their tender cradle songs over the prickly cradles of their unfeathered chicks. Therefore, to him, the interruption of the organic functions at death automatically leads to the dissolution of the personality which emanated from that brain. This way of seeing things is widespread but is in stark contrast to the spiritual approach. According to the latter, a human being is an immaterial spirit incarnated in a physical body.
